NOW is the time for your young dog to come of age. It's often the best way. You will have to help the youngster, but working with collies is a team effort, and with your support and encouragement, your youngster will become an adult, in no time at all. I accept that over facing her wont help, so standing with her, and standing up to sheep, will show her that they are nothing to fear.

I had a 20 week old pup, admittedly he had balls of steel, and within a further 8 weeks, he had a 200 yard outrun, an outrun which he never lost, incidentally. He was my only dog, and immediately took on groups of 60+ sheep, but with my help. At a 11 months, he'd face anything with 2 legs or 4, and would move 400 ewes single handed.

Give your puppy the chance, she may surprise you! ;)

Alec.

It it's needed for a specific job, are there no contract shepherds in your area who could help you out short term? Try your local market, International Sheep Dog Society, NFU, etc.
