Hi, Horsey has got his annual injections next week & just noticed it is on same day as a jumping clinic we are booked into. Is it ok to ride same day, i seem to remember people telling me not to ride previously?
I always thought that you shouldnt ride after the yearly jab but a few years ago forgot the jab coincided with a dressage lesson where you were non-stop for 45 mins (give or take the usual few mins break before continuing again). Would have cost £50 to cancel so went ahead hoping for the best. It never caused any issues for my mare.
I do always ask for the vet to jab in the bum though. Not sure if this made any difference but is my preference after seeing a few with sore necks after theirs.
Timely thread! Three of mine were jabbed today and the vet was very strict that they weren't to sweat for 3 days...it is very warm here anyway so no work until Friday. So on sunbathing duty - shucks!
Vet practice that I use recco's no stressed work for 24 hrs, best to take it easy for 48 hrs after jab.
I usually work them early on the day before vet arrives, then go for a pootle-hack the next day, then normal service is resumed
I used to vet nurse, mostly equine, and the reason was as others have said - so they don't sweat it out. The injection site can be sore/stiff and some do get under the weather. I personally wouldn't. Maybe get him jabbed a few days before and just pay the extra call out fee if you want to still do your clinic. Call the vets in the morning to ask their advice as it may have changed...haven't nursed for a few years!
