I'm useless when it comes to showing as haven't done any in years. My 4 year old has his first competition tomorrow and is doing the Novice Working Hunter at a local show. Could you please tell me what to expect, I think you jump first don't you? He will need to be plaited I presume?

Any advice gratefully received. Posted here rather than CR as thought I might get a better response.

Yes to plaits.
Plain bridle, you can have a snaffle as its novice.
Jump first then called in for showing part.
Will have to walk trot canter and gallop in open order.

Plaited def, brown tack if you have if not black will do locally! Hacking jacket for rider and shirt and tie, and snaffle bridle for novice. YOu will go in and jump round first then all clears, and sometime 4 faulters etc, depending on how many go clear will go into ring after and walk trot canter as whole, then line up and do individual shows, which should include a gallop.
Jumping course will be simple, usually 2'6"max bout 7 jumps one double, all rustic, usually some straw bales and fillers.
good luck!

Thanks to both of you, this is what I thought but my memories are a bit hazy with the details! Lets hope he behaves and it doesn't all get too much for him

I recently did one where when we came back in the judge had them all stripped and trotted up, and all ridden - just like in the open classes. I was a bit surprised at a 2'6 class. Meant it was as well I'd done my gallop after the jumping, as we weren't asked to do that in the ride-round as you'd expect.

Really? That seems a bit bizarre! Oh well got to do a clear round first, never occured to me I might have to trot him up for a novice class.

Yup!
It was at that stage I realised I'd never practiced running up in hand. Fortunately, it didn't occur to my mare not to... 4yo bails out supposedly experienced owner once again.

Think positive - that clear round's a given...

Lets hope my 4 year old bails me out too then! Was it your mare's first competition? I was wondering how sharp he'll be.... could be interesting!!

First time in "show ring" - had done a clear round, an SJ class and a pairs hunter trial, so in her book, was apparently a seasoned pro!
You never totally know how they're going to react until you're there, do you. I've had everything from plods that became nutcases to the complete opposite, when they first experienced "show conditions", so I try not to make any assumptions on their behalf now. Hence was annoyed at myself for not preparing the trot-up.

you find most local shows it all depends on the judge on the day wether they ask you to trot up or not ! some judges are picky ! some judges my ask you to walk away and trot as part of your individual show as to save time x
