Working hunter attire - hat?

It’s been a while since doing my last working hunter and that was the era of velvet hats only. Now looking to try a few again, but no longer use a velvet hat of the era. What is now acceptable? We are just thinking local level for now.

i don’t see many using velvet hats now unless also doing flat classes, most are the fancy peaked ones - i wear my slightly less fancy karben one

Most wh and whp require hats to current standard at least in the jumping section, definitely check the rules 1st, whether county, RC or other.
BPs are mandatory for jumping phase too for a good number of organisations.

Local level as long as it is current standard it probably doesn’t matter. WH we usually have a skull cap and put a velvet cover over the top, lots of people don’t bother. The main thing is that it fits and is safe. Once you get to HOYS you’ll still see all sorts, some top of the range others more workmanlike.

Interesting, this was the answer I was after! I feel things have moved on in the last 15 years - would prefer to not have acquire a hat purely for local level stuff.

even at HOYS level many of them are in posh charles owen/samshield etc, i think it’s more “fashionable” these days - suits me just fine, as like you i didn’t want to go out and buy a hat!
