Just bought a super looking 6yr old who I think would make a fab working hunter. Lots of schooling etc to come before I enter a ring! I'm a bit out of the loop with the showing as haven't done it since working hunter pony days. What sort of heights are the fences for novice & opens (horse classes) county level? What am I to expect for a top up to height HOYS class - waters, bounces, bullfinches etc?
Also, my horse has a couple of splints yet I'm presuming most judges wouldn't be bothered by these? Many thanks in advance for your answers.

Sounds like a fun prospect!

Novice approx 3'3"
Open approx 3'9

Haven't seen a bounce, but have seen loads of dog leg strides, jumping towards decorative trees, water trays, bull finches

The current fashion seems to be a more forward stride, less of a show jumping stride and splints are not ignored, but I think are only really taken into account in the case of otherwise equal placings. I think also if they're obviously "acquired" splints rather than ones developed due to conformation issues then they're more forgiveable!

Many thanks for that, very helpful. A few days hunting with the Quorn before next years mission I reckon!
