I was meant to be going ahead with putting my mare in foal this year but due to my car deciding to break, its broken the bank lol.

So..........

I am planning trying my very first Working Hunter show at the start of May, only doing novice so I can get my confidence up with her jumping as she is fast and strong. So, need a little advice on what is allowed and what isnt??

For novice WH do I use a snaffle??

Are breast plates allowed??

Is it only front boots for the jumping??

Many thanks

What sort of level are you aiming for? County or local level?

I would say that you only need a snaffle, however look at the rules and see what it says. Breastplates are allowed, but you cannot take it off for the showing phase. I am pretty sure you would be allowed back boots on as well, but all boots need to be taken off for the showing phase.

Other pointers:
Leather girth if possible
Numnah that's the same colour as your saddle - or none at all
Navy velvet hat with flesh coloured harness is traditional
Some form of spurs - even if they are dummy spurs
Hunter bridle is best - no bling

At the moment it is local level and depending on how we get on, I am planning a couple county ones later on in the year.

Thats fine, got a snaffle that she is semi controllable in, i think breastplates look good on the hunters, so thats another tick and I will have to double check the boots as I have had loads of different people saying yes 4 boots, and no only 2 allowed.

Leather girth if possible - Dont have a leather one but the thorowgood one
Numnah that's the same colour as your saddle - or none at all - bidding on ebay for a brown working hunter one......
Navy velvet hat with flesh coloured harness is traditional - dont have one of these but will look into it.
Some form of spurs - even if they are dummy spurs - better get on ebay for the dummy spurs :D
Hunter bridle is best - no bling - Its only hunter bridles I have, which is a plus

Thank you

For the navy hat I just bought a cheapo one off Equestrianclearance. It didnt have a flesh coloured harness, but I saved myself £££'s!

Dont forget a tweed jacket, tie and coloured shirt for you along with non-white jodphurs!

£££'s is the problem haha!

I have a tweed jacket and normally wear an ivory shirt with a blue tie and have cream jods.

I did this with dee, a simple hunter bridle with a cambridge pelham and i used a black saddlecloth to go with my saddle and worse smart competition wear with a shirt and tie. Was only locla but we won the class and championship too :)

If you use a skull cap, you can get velvet covers for under a fiver in most tackshops. Al showed at County in her HS1 with a washed out blue velvet cover on, and all she got was compliments on her and her horse's smart turnout.

If you do decide to step up a level I think under the SHB rules you are now only allowed front boots not back worth checking if you decide to go to county!

I was told that I cant use a pelham for novice or am I wrong?

Dont think Ill be winning anything, ill be happy if I get her around the course and I stay on :D - thank you for coming rosette would be nice though.

I have a skull cap and was thinking about getting a blue velvet cover just now instead of forking out :D

I thought this was the case. I am planning trying to present myself and the horse as if I was at county level, so I can get into the swing of things.

Unless specified in the rules of a particular show you can use any suitable bit, even in novice working hunter classes, novice hunters are shown in doubles or pelhams, use what your horse goes best in, a pelham will be fine.

as previous post - any suitable bit - unless of course the show actually states a novice should be in a snaffle. so use whats best for you. dark wool numnahs are fine & discreet.
SHBGB rules are briefly (but check out their website for the full picture) - no back boots allowed anymore - front for the jumping phase only.
60% for jumping performance, 40% as for Hunter Classes.
Split like this - 40% (so if you jump clear you get 40 ) for actual jumping and 20% style. then go back in for your second phase like a normal flat hunter class which is scored - Ride - 20 and conformation 20%. No change of rider or tack will be allowed.
tweed jacket with collar & tie (some peolpe wear stocks), cream jods, long boots, spurs are allowed.
skull caps (or safety hats) for the jumping phase with black or navy cover. no prob if you go back in for the 2nd phase still in your skull cap.some people change into hunt caps (again depends on shows rules too) but thats perosn own choice. horse & tack workmanlike & tidy!

Thanks for all that.

I will play around with her bit and double check the rules for this local show, I think it may have said novice classes in snaffles but not sure if that was for just the ridden classes

:D

ps - the most important bit - have fun!

Thanks :D
