Hey im not sure if this is the right place to post but was hoping for some help & advice

first - i need some working hunter fence ideas as im going to be making some
wondered if anyone had ideas i know how to make a water tray but other types would be great =]

second - i ride my d in a hanging cheek .. however i was told he must be in a pelham .. but iv never rode him in one and i dont want to do any damage so can anyone tell me if i MUST be in one & if i do whats the least severe ( i know its on how the rider uses it )

third - im having a big problem with my D during inhand work hes really good but then begins to canter and leap but somehow im still in control as soon as he breaks the trot i bring him back to walk and we begin again .. we did a local inhand and he went well but again did the silly canter/leap thing the judge said i need to work on the control also he prefers to see welsh's in rope headcoller's ... is this a must at county or my choice? does anyone have any tips ?

i will be happy to take any advice and any questions you need to know im happy to answear :)

hi,
you can look on polyjumps under their workers section for ideas for jumps that might help you.

you can jump in whatever you like as long as your horse goes well in it. obviously bitless arent accepted at county level in workers.

as for the inhand just keep practicing, make sure the horse doesnt anticipate it so in your practice maybe walk away then turn and walk back then halt then into trot etc,
it just varies it up a little, if you are having problems with control defo stick to a bridle and not a headcollar.

Judges have different preferences on headcollar vs bridle but in your case i would stick to bridle until under control again!

thank you :) yes going to keeep trying =] also taking him to a little show on sunday for some fun as hes worked extreamly hard the past few weeks so last show before his little holiday will take the rope headcoller to see how he does :)

RE fence building, I would just get them as rustic looking as possible, WH courses are meant to replicate a day's hunting so depending what level you are at, you should have some brushes under the fences, possibly a water tray (if you can't get hold of one my friend uses barrels cut in half, or empty horselick trays- be creative) i love finding things to build with, its good fun! :)
Beetle is right, you don't have to ride in a pelham at all, it is whatever you feel happiest with, plenty of people ride the county level workers in hanging cheek and snaffles.
Good luck x

Have a look here www.dkrustix.com for some ideas. A cheap way to make a water tray is to cover a piece of board in blue plastic - I use rubble sacks, about 99p for a roll of them :) When I'm teaching out and about I just take a roll of sacks, lay them on the ground and just use a couple of poles to hold them in place.

Re bits, some judges get funny about horses not being shown in doubles or pelhams, but I prefer to see a horse going nicely in a snaffle than not so well with a load of iron mongery in its mouth :)

Can't help re in hand showing of Ds, know nothing about it!

Bales of straw, tree cuttings (conifers are good) lay some dark coloured rugs (old ones) over some poles and cover in branches/twigs etc in this kind of shape ^, pallets (although you'd need to be careful with them) buy a small toddler padding pool to use as a water jump, wheely bins (if you have any spare brown or green ones, wall paper tables (their dirt cheap and make great fillers if you paint them up). Chicken feeders lined up under a fence.

I'll keep thinking...

wow you guys have great ideas can i come hire you to make me the jumps ;)
going to go on a scavenge i think to be fair hes very good at the moment we did our first ever workers and he won =] was only local but he had to jump through a horse shoe and erm that scared me more than him haha

Dressing the fences is half the fun of putting out WH jumps. Agree with Kenzo that conifer tree cuttings are good. Last year we stuck them in the gymkhana stepping stones (upside down plastic flower pots with hole in would do) as fence fillers. Can also use them to decorate the wings too. Sorry but have no ideas about the showing ?? for the Sec D

I think alot of judges do prefer to see welshies in rope halters..it's 'correct' for showin most M&M's, and you'll be suprised how much control you have in them (more than standard headcollar and lead) However you can show in your bridle if you want...but the judge may assume your horse is naughty or you lack control or something.
