Working Hunter Help!

Hi All,

I have decided that I really want to try entering my boy in to working hunter but I have never done this class before and after a little advice if possible?

We want to make sure we like it first before going out and getting a tweed jacket, is it ok to wear a black one as a one off? Also my horse is much happier in his acoustic ears, are these ok to be worn along with a his breast plate?

Any help would be much appreciated :)
 
Breast plate is good. Keep it simple if at all possible. Acoustic ears would not really be ok. The point of the class is to find a well behaved horse that can jump a fence without aids to comfort them. Recommend you borrow a jacket if at all possible. But your black one will be fine if it is just a recce mission to see if you like it. Just my tuppence worth.
 
As a one off at local level a black jacket would be fine.

Re ear covers, ideally not. I can’t actually see this mentioned in the BSHA rules though, should you like it and want to try county standard WH. Even if allowed, I don’t think it would do you any favours for the reason another poster said and, as it is a showing class, I’d be wondering what they may be hiding underneath

Locally, best to check with the show. Trailblazers, for example, didn’t allow ear covers.

 
I won a novice working hunter class wearing a black jacket as it was all I had. We were the only clear round!
 
A lot of the local WH classes have black jackets, people come for a ride round and honestly the shows would rather have the entry money than not!

I would say try and do without the ears though.
 
If its noise your horse is sensitive to use ear plugs instead of the ear bonnet. They aren't allowed in showing ,(tradition more than rule).

Ideally a tweed if you can borrow one but otherwise black will be fine for local showing for now.
