I'm going to compete in a working hunter class (just for a bit of fun!) next weekend, I was wondering if this attire would be ok for my horse?

I'll obviously get rid of the sheepskin/saddle pad and just put a plain black numnah on. Will his grackle and 3-ring gag be ok?

I'm only used to SJ and XC!!

You can use any suitable bridle and martingle for WH, but no change of tack before the second phase when you all go in togther.
You can put plain brushing boots on the horse and these can be taken off after jumping
A dark brown numnah the shape of the saddle would be even better than a black one. But as long as its dark and saddle shaped, will be fine
have fun!

You can keep the sheepskin numnah minus the black saddle pad - thats perfectly acceptable & will look good on your horse, everything else is fine - good luck!!

Your bridle will be fine. However, the numnah needs to be dark and not white. Everything for hunters is understated and that is a little bright! It is also a little long for the saddle, so if you could get something slightly shorter that would be even better. However, if your horse is likely to be uncomfortable without it and you don't have time to buy a new one, then use it anyway - better to be penalised for incorrect turnout than have a grumpy horse.

A trad wh judge will expect to see a conventional cavesson and a snaffle...

I think WH should be shown in snaffles etc, but look at Cruise Control et al, positively festooned with gadgets, so they must be allowed.

In the open classes these horses (usually around 16.2/17hh) are jumping very large fences at hunting pace - I think a snaffle would be a bit hopeful in those circumstances!

Very true - parhaps a double bridle then!
TBH no one hunts in a snaffle, do they!! (Or very few, before lots of people come on saying they do)

Like i've said before snaffles are the ideals everyone should be working to but it is worlds better to have a nice light contact on a potentially "harsh" bit than haul on a snaffle all day long. Really a double bridle should only be used on a "finished" horse. Otherwise i think everyone's picked up on little niggles in tack
