Went to a local show today. My class was poor, judge took a dislike to Hattie as I walked in the ring and didn't even watch our individual show. The 'ring' was a huge field with XC jumps in that if someone was to fall off the horse could easily get on to the road.
The class before mine was a working hunter and they were jumping a course of XC jumps with only one that was knockdownable. I thought the idea of working hunter was the clear rounds go on to the show part? How can they judge them over soild XC jumps?

I think it's mostly refusals that would count towards whether you get through or not. I've done some classes with pretty solid jumps in them... think thats to be expected in a hunter class.

Having a course with access to a road is just silly! I wouldn't have entered it.

Sorry to hear you had a bad day

I've seen working hunters with things like wooden gates, phesant feeder types, but these where logs, rails, barrels and sleepers.

Solid fences are quite popular with workers and really its the top scoring ones that go through to the showing part so while yes having poles down will lower your score, stops will lower it more. Also you can judge the way of going and rhythm etc well over solid fences.

Yeah I've done all that before too. And tyres, ski jumps, hen houses all that sort of thing.
I thought it was all appropriate because they were 'rustic' lol

Would be interesting to hear from someone who knows more about working hunter classes...

I have done a workers class that had solid fences in which was part of the venues x country course. I thought it was great fun though but there were also your normal worker type fences. Its different nearly everywhere you go. Sometimes only the clears go through to the next stage and sometimes everyone does. Annoyingly I think I have only been in two where they haven't let the people who didn't go clear through and they were the only times I didn't go clear.
