What do you actually get judged on?

D is pretty and nicely marked with a fair pop on her so I'm tempted to have a go at some working hunter at RC but I'm not sure what to expect.

Apologies for the numpty question, I usually stick more to the riding classes but for once I'd quite like to have a "Prettiest Horse" rosette!

Normally in a working hunter class you'll go in and do your round of jumps first, these will be rustic jumps & when everybody's jumped, the judge or ring steward will ask you all to come back in unless you've been eliminated. Then you'll probably have to walk, trot and canter round together, until the judge calls you in to form a line.

Then when you're lined up the person at the end of the line is asked to do their little show - walk, trot and canter on both reins, possibly a gallop, and then halt and salute. Then when everyone's done their show you'll probably have to walk round together again while he adds up the scores. The judge will then pull you in in order of placings.

The jumping accounts for 50% of the marks, not sure on how the other marks are distributed.

You wil go individually to do a a course of rustic jumps..then will get called back in if you go clear sometimes faulters are brought back depending on how many clears..when you come back in you will all go around the ring steward will ask you all to trot canter then change the rein and do the same you will sometimes be asked to extend canter down the long side then you will all be brought into a line where you are pulled out to do your individual show sometimes judge will tell you what he wants but generally a walk away from judge trot back trot figure eight canter both reins then a gallop on one rein...judged normally 60% jumping 40% ridden but it is a hunter class so try and get horse forward in the jumping phase

Thanks all for advice. I'm thinking I might give the beginners class a go and see how we find it.

Two quick questions:

Does it matter that she's a mw cob and not a hunter type for RC level?

Can she wear a pelham with double reins?

Generally in a working hunter, even at local level, the judge rides the horse - it's only ponies who do shows.

Jump individually, clears back in for the go round. Pulled in line in order. Judge rides, horses are stripped, trotted up in hand, tack back on. Back out to walk round, then pulled back into line for final order.

Judged 60% jump - style and performance 20% ride 20% conformation. War wounds acceptable, conformation faults not - ie small scars ok, curbs not ok

Jump style should be more forward than show jumping, judge is looking for clear round, stylish and mannered - the horse the judge would most like to contemplate taking for a day's hunting!

Boots allowed for jumping but taken off to go back in, plain brown tack including martingale, bit of your choice. Hacking jacket, fawn or buff breeches, gloves, spurs, hat with harness for jumping.

Have fun
