Working Hunters Classes

First part consists of a round of rustic jumps which should be jumped at a 'hunting' pace. Those that jumps clear come back and do the showing part which is an individual show - walk, trot and canter on both reins and a gallop. Sometimes you need to do a rein back. The judge will usually ride the horse next and then they're all stripped and run up in hand to judge the conformation.

Usually ridden in a snaffle or double bridle. Boots are allowed in the jumping stage but not the showing stage.

Umm...thats about all i can remember from back in the day! lol

Not sure how the scoring works...i think it's something like 60% for jumping and 40% for the showing/confo part but that was a long time ago! lol. The height thing just depends on what level your competing at, usually for county level it's around 3'6 - 3'9. At my riding club we did a novice and an open which was set at 2'6 and 2'9.

It also depends on the height of the horse, i.e. under 15hh will jump a certain height (normally about 2'3 - 2'6) amd over 15hh is usually over 3'.

It's unusual for a judge to ride AND strip them, although it does happen.

Either way, be prepared for a long old class!

Re the scoring, 60% jumping 40% confo and MANNERS! Very important. If I remember rightly (which I may not) it is 3 for a knock down and 4 for a refusual, (might be more for both) but it is more for a refusal as it is test of the horses courage and boldness, rather than an SJ round over rustic fences. It is usually at the judges discretion whether you can see the score sheet or not, unless it is under BSPS rules and then you can.

Marks are out of 100, you carry through 50 if you go clear to the showing phase - 10 for knock down, 20 for refusal - 3 refusals = eliminated. Jumping style marks are out of 20, confirmation is out of 20 and manners are out of 10. Ponies UK have 30 for confimation & 10 for style.
If its a horse class, if you go through to the phase, you will all walk, trot canter round & gallop, the judge may ride your horse - depending on the level you compete at - if its a local show, then they might not, but county & HOYS RI qualifiers they definitly will.
If its a pony class, you most likely won't all go round together (again depends on the level you compete at) and you do an individual show - walk, trot, canter & gallop - unlikely you will be asked to do a rein back.

They made us do rein back...apparently something to do with incase you need to open a gate or something like that. But i only did RC level, i think they made the rules up as they went along! lol
