I am really stuck on how to work my horse long and low which I understand is really crucial in preventing problems occuring and also helping any back pain related issues. I see other people riding their horses in the arena and they seem to have their heads inches from the floor and are able to do this is walk, trot and canter. I can't ever do this with my horse. In walk he just naps towards the mounting block (to come out of the school), in trot he just naps towards the mounting block even faster and in canter he would be virtually uncontrollable, not to mention he probably would have tripped over by this stage anyway!
How can I get my horse to work long and low in trot for example when all he does is speed up? I tried last night as I am conscious that I might be holding him too tight when ridden in his pelham. I tried slowing my rise and speaking to him, but neither worked. Any suggestions?
I manage to get a decent enough mark when I work him in free walk in novice and elementary dressage tests in his snaffle.
