Ok just to give a bit of background.
My young mare, who is 6 and as far as I know has never had a foal, has chronic mastitis and is on quite strong antibiotic powders in the morning and evening. The mastitis itself isn't bothering her but she's been off work with it now for 3 weeks and is totally fed up. She loves her work and thrives on it, and she's also a tough little mare in that the more you ask of her the more she gives. She hates even having a day off and is usually worked 6/7 days a week, both shchooling, hacking and fittening work. She really misses her work and is very mopey out in the field and spends most of the day looking to come in. If she had been just turned out 24/7 she'd probably switch off but she has to come in at night to get the antibiotics and the area washed and kept clean. Do you think it would be ok to do some gentle work with her even though she's on antibiotics? The vets have said to take it easy and I'm reluctant to do too much with her as she has quite a severe infection and is on the antibiotics.
Second question, does anyone have any experience of chronic masitis? Our own vet tried her on powders, intramuscular and intravenous antibiotics but they made no difference and so she sent her into the vet hospital. She was scanned which showed a deep rooted fibrous infection (luckily not a tumour). They also took biopsys to confirm it wasn't a tumour and to find out what type of pathogen is causing the infection. She also had severe oedema in the area so they think the mass is interfering with the lymphatic system. So at this stage while we're waiting for the biopsy results, she's on more antibiotics, the area is being washed a few times a day with iodine and water as hot as she can bear. She's also going to be given sodium iodide intravenously which is to try and soften the granulor mass.
Sorry it's very long but any advice or thoughts appreciated
