Wow, the upper age limits seem to have been raised since it was started! Would have thought Lucy W would be on the World Class proper after having been picked for the Olympics?
A good friend of mine was picked for the potential squad (dressage) and she's listed in the link I posted but not in the OP's list. I can't be looking at the wrong list as I know she was picked...
I think they have several assessments then a final one where the decisions are made.
One of the people on the event list was well and truly run away with when they swapped horses at the final, so I'm supposing they are mostly going on results not what they saw on the day.
I think I'd rather see the money spread around thinner, there are some on all the lists who have sponsors, fabulous facilities and plenty of back up already...

dont get me started on the eventing one Kerrili...... there seems to be no ryhme or reason behind the eventing one. i have no idea why they thought leslie would know what is going on in british eventing a ssomeone said he isnt here and at least one person was given a bye and put straight back on despite not having a four star horse which is allegedly why one other (at least) was told they didnt make it. another was dragged to the one eventing trial only to be told they were too old, you would have thought they might know that in advance and they are no older than at least two others on eventing potential. i could go on but why bother, it seems to me they had decided in advance who they were having the trials were just theere to make it appear 'fair'. as Henry horn said there are people on there with plenty back up already and in fact not doing any better than some who havent got back up at all.
Lu, that just makes me very glad to be non-british... it must be absolutely infuriating to work so hard and then for Selection to be demonstrably unfair.
(not that i'm good, or young, enough to be on any such list, of course!)
and the difference betwen frankie being a selector and leslie bing one is that for showjumping you can demonstrate you ability in the arena cos thet is where you compete..... pity eventers need to do xc really isnt it. also one of the selected used to work for leslie, how does that work?
I have heard there was only one eventing start rider that CH decribed as "being able to improve the horse" on the flat... and its not who you think either!

From what I've heard they look at your results, decide if you're worth seeing, then judge you all in one place at one time.

My friend went to two selection days. She had to warm up while being watched by the judges, then school for something like 30 mins, then cool down, still being watched. Horse then handed over to her trainer for proper coool down and she had to discuss with the judges why she did what she did, what she was trying to achieve, and so on. Then had to sit in on a day of seminars and lectures about riding, physiology, all sorts of stuff and I think saw the judges again at the end? I think they narrowed it down from that, called back the shorter list they liked and put them through it all again. Then they chose the final list (this was for the dressage, don't know about the rest).

oh, interesting. was it S M-D? the dressage judge i wrote for earlier this year could not stop raving about her riding... and she wasn't competing that day!
mind you, by CH's standards, most of us are probably incapable of improving the horse!
the thing about that one is that even tough she rides well she has stated recently she does not want to be an eventer for ever, she wants to be a tv presenter........

That back page spread in eventing on her was hilarious! Quite how you can be so immaculate around horses baffles me....
SMD is such a lovely lovely person and rides amazingly well, we have the same trainer and she was the first person to come and genuinely ask how I was the first (and second for that matter) time Sansaw went t*ts up for me... They always come and talk at events and keep themselves to themselves, only once have I ever known them get involved in a scrap so to speak, and it was completely prevoked by the other person!
Shes amazingly focused with her eventing, and although, yes, she wants to be a TV presenter, she also has some pretty high eventing goals, that even if she doesn't reach I would imagine she would come pretty close to!
Personally, she really really deserves it and she works very hard, unlike alot of them, especially a certain one who didn't make it!
This reply is mainly to Henryhorn & Lucretia. I try my damn best to keep my mouth shut about the politics in any sport especially showjumping. Unfortunately when I see these posts I can not bite my tongue any longer. HH you are quite right re your assumptins of the background some of these people come from. Has anyone noticed that 99% of these fortunate few are in a professional yard?(which costs money or they have family connections) IMHO this is again jobs for the old school boys. Originally WC started out for riders that got results & showed talent regardless of there background, families, or facilities. then in 06 it changed, in my view for the worse. No longer were ordinary riders with results getting through the stages. Just the 'named' riders mainly with there professional trainers stood by their side. I can honestly tell you how embarrasing it was for 4 years when you turned up for WC training to find none of these big named riders actually bothered to show, ( they claimed the cash on offer though & thats a different story but also a fact) You are so right, 90% of those selected will get to the top anyway. but others that only have a couple of ordinary horses, yet have achieved every goal set for them in a season get dropped for no good reason. For the riders that are not in Pro yards the lack of extra 1st class training is devastating. But that is how the system works, they scratch each others backs. I know for a fact I will get s**t on from a dizzy height for writing this. Do I care? Not a jot. Feel better now
You people baffle me.
I try not to get caught amongst upset on these threads, but really, I must comment.
S M-D is 17yo, she has won an Individual and Team Gold medal for GB. She clearly works her socks off - young riders have to work bloody hard to make team places.
How can you be sooo rude. She is only young and if she has aspirations for her future GOOD FOR HER. If she brings home gold medals then of course she should be on the list and if I'm not mistaken she is the youngest one on the list.
I wish some people could see past their jealousy and back our British riders!
Totally agree with HH and Freshman I know at least 2 of the riders on the list and yes they may have talent but they have the backing from parents with money and sponsors to be able to afford the horses in the first place. Makes me cross is it really a sport or is too much money involved. There are so many talented riders out there who deserve more of a chance. But thats just my view.
get off your high horse. no one said she wasnt a good rider nor that she doesnt work hard but she has stated on the record that she does not se her future in full time eventing so i am at a loss to understand why we are backing her. that is all. unless you think that you dont require 100% dedication and commitment to your sport to truly succeed.
as it happens i am toldby several people whose opinion i value far more than yours that you couldnt meet a nicer girl but this is tax payers money so nicenest shouldnt really be an issue.
Come on, are you saying that a 17yo isn't allowed to dream or think about an alternative future? The girl has clearly been committed to her sport for the last 17 years (hence medals and selection), and her parental backing have obviously been committed also!
Do you think Gary Lineker, Sue Barker, Sally Gunnell and Sharon Davis decided that once they retired from their sports they would work in Asda?
