Is anyone actually going? I don't often go to these things but I really wanted to go to this. My research however has shown that going direct to Caen is £462!!! We could go Dover to Calais and that adds 5hours travel on EACH WAY! They don't make it easy!

I really wanted to, but it worked out v pricey as you say. I'm doing Blair instead! Europeans there next year so thought I'd do some reconnaissance! Oh and some shopping! Hoping to catch WEG on tv- anyone know where it's being broadcast?

You could go into Caen - Ouistreham as a foot passenger for around £65 return, then catch a bus into Caen. There may even be a shuttle bus directly to the stadium where the dressage and show-jumping is being held. Obviously if you want to go to le Pin for the eventing or Sartilly for endurance, then it would not be so easy without a car ......

Go via the eurotunnel. When I looked at ferry prices it was nearly £500 return and journey would be 6 hours! Tunnel is £200 return and takes 2 hours to get to France! :)

Dover to Dunkirk is cheap if you don't mind the drive down, the motorways are very good. Or Newhaven to Dieppe, either way Calais to Caen should'nt take five hours?

Having done the drive to Deauville to compete , which is 40 mins on good roads max from Caen the drive in a lorry from Calais was 3.5 hrs and that's limited to 90 kms per hour.
Last year we drove to a place between Caen and mont st. Michele and and that took us 4 hrs from Dieppe and that was on the non toll roads so much slower .
I therefore think 5 hrs is not realistic ( unless you drive like mr Bean!)
The toll roads are fab, empty and good and the bridges spectacular.
Enjoy!

I've booked ferry from portsmouth to caen. for 4x4, 4 adults and having a cabin it was £400 return. im not too far from portsmouth so although its a long crossing there won't be much driving either end. really excited now!
