I was just checking the results ...... Zamp is a great dog... we can dream of a correct GSD going all the way to BIS, but afraid I cant see it happening !
It is too political sadly.

But wouldn't it be amazing if he did.......... wow!

I hope we get to see him on the TV tonight, but expect it will be the dreadful Ben Foggie camping it up as usual

Why cant we have presenters who know what a dog show is about?
This is the biggest Dog Show IN THE WORLD... WE NEED TO SEE THE SHOW, NOT THE IDIOT PRESENTERS AND THEIR DOGGIES!!!

He is a gorgeous dog. If everything goes acccording to plan I might have a puppy by him later in the year - fingers crossed! Unfortunately think its pretty unlikely he will go all the way, would upset too many people. Hope he is seen on tv tonight. How nice to see the right type of Shepherd win at Crufts.

Can someone explain to me why "it is too political" and "would upset too many people" if this shepherd won?We had one for a family pet years ago and love the breed so genuinely don't know. That was when they were Alsations btw!

They are a complicated breed but the shortest version as i am tired is the divide in types between the english, the german and the working lines and everyone has their different opinions as to which is correct

for me it is Zamp and he done well today

Lovely to see him on TV.
Forgot it was Zena doing the group, she is one of the few Allrounders who will put up a correct GSD, although the number is growing!

I thought the Cardi was Stunning!

It is very hard to describe in a few words the situation in GSDs but there is a distinct split in breed type between the German type (which the majority consider the correct type) and what is known as the English type. The use of German bloodlines over here greatly improved the type, but some die hard breeders refused to use the lines, and instead seemed to make a concerted effort to exaggerate the worst faults of the English type. Most of the all breed shows, like Crufts, tend to be judged by what are known as all rounder judges, and they seem to prefer the old fashioned type. The KC did not like the way those of us showing the German type wanted to change the way our shows were run etc and were quite anti the GSD folk for a while. Therefore I think a lot of us feel that a dog such as Zamp would never have a chance of winning BIS because it would upset the establishment. Incidentally, they were never "Alsations", they were "Alsatians" following the war and then in the 70s (I think) there was a huge campaign for the name to revert to German Shepherd Dog, which we eventually achieved.

Glad to hear you love the breed, for many Shepherd people there really is no other dog. I think that is why we upset people sometimes, we are absolutely dedicated to the breed.

I also don't think the handler showed Zamp to his best, but remember it is highly unlikely this dog will have ever been in an indoor show before. The Sieger show rings are each the size of a football pitch, and the dogs are gaited for ages, including a time off lead, not quite the same as a quick spin round a slippy green carpet. Also the dogs in German are usually just left to stand on the end of a lead, not posed as was expected at Crufts.

I've seen him on home turf, last year.
He is obviously so used to the germanic showing (outside attraction etc) that the big ring wasn't bringing out the best in him.
In the small ring he benefited from the atmosphere.

So what is he like in the flesh then? Bet the atmosphere in the breed ring was electric when he was in - was there any attraction?

I know the stewards at Crufts used to be pretty strict. My Mum judged there and even though she was happy for a bit of outside attraction to take place (no running round obviously) they were jumping on people who dared to even cough!

There will be photos of the sheps at Crufts on my gsd forum hopefully by tomorrow taken by far.dog.art the offical gsd photographer, link can be found in my profile so i dont get told of for advertising on here lol we activate registraions one by one so dont worry if you cant get in at first

There aren't "official" breed togs at Crufts. Anyone, even Joe Public can apply for a P.P and take shots freelance.
My husband took several including one of Zamp which are being used by the K.C on the official website.

Can I just ask, is the breed standard for the GSD such a low hind quarter. Sorry to sound like an idiot but to me the German dog almost looked constipated, his back end was so crunched under him. I've nver noticed that to such an extreme in 'every day' GSDs and it just looked so weird to me.

I know times they are a changing and all that, but does anybody else find it weird that a Sieger was at Crufts?!

Was watching coverage of the Saturday night, trying to explain to the BF: "That's not the way we do it...we have a bit more running, shouting, tracksuit-wearing, that kind of thing...."

In fairness to the allrounders, didn't the Shotaan bitch do very well last year? I seem to recall jumping off the sofa and whooping very loudly....

I have to say that, not being involved at all with GSD's, my first thought was 'OMG that topline!' - but then every breed standard is very different

Re the pic - it's quite stylized as is the trend for still photos but you can only tell a dog's true construction by seeing it stand or move on a loose lead.
The back itself is straight and the croup is what is sloping in the photo.
My two all-time faves would be Uran Wilstiegerland and Eros Hambachtal (Google!) and although I am being biased you couldn't say either of them have the 'roach' that German types are acused of having.

Ah interesting. I'm afraid I'm squarly in the English version camp

Ha ha, I was kinda loath to start commenting on this but I got sucked in!!!

The most important thing is that they are sound of mind and (however strangely-shaped!) body.

I'll shut up now.
