According to the Italian Federation website, GB team is in Silver medal position, and Paul Sidwell who is not on the team is in Silver individually with David Matthews in Bronze. Fingers crossed for the Cones tomorrow!
I really wish I'd have gone (a nice holiday in Rome too)
Fantastic result for GB. It's a real shame that Paul Sidwell wasn't picked for the team. This sort of thing always happens! But if he can pick up a medal and the team can still get hold of a gold, who's complaining.
GB might be rubbish at getting medals at four in hand competitions, such as those at the WEG, but we're up there when it comes to the more "budget" end of the sport - singles and ponies!
It certainly looks set to be a real nail-biting finish this afternoon as the points are so close in both Team & Individual standings. Although there were several eliminations on the Marathon, it doesn't seem to have sorted them out as much as might have been expected. Di Hayes was only 39th but her score of 85.1 is not so far behind David who was 2nd on 72.5. The Dressage has been very important.
Dressage is always influencial at the top level, but horses that are good at dressage are usually most responsive in the obstacles, so the pattern is to be expected.
However, the cone driving stage has been overhauled as a discipline in the last couple of years. Courses and times are much tighter than they used to be. Whereas it was common for people to have double clears a few years back, now it is a rare achievement. Expect things to be shaken up a little later.
Fabulous news - I was just about to check FISE when your message appeared! I'm just going to send a text to Paul to congratulate him & John on their achievement.
Di Hayes won the cones with the only clear - good for her, having been well down the field in the first two phases. There should be some celebrations in the British camp tonight!
I have e-mailed the news to the HHO Editor, the BBC Sport website and the Telegraph website. Will be interested to see if any of them give the drivers' achievements some much deserved publicity.
