Sorry sorry! Another worm thread from me :o This is the first time I've used worm counting though so I'm still learning the ropes :cool:

That was the result of our worm count which is apparently a good and acceptable amount.

What level is the lowest not good/unacceptable egg per gram count? :o
 
Google "worm count horses" and I find:

0-200 epg - low roundworm burden
201-499 - mild " "
500-000 - moderate " "
1000+ - high " "


Less than -50 usually means no treatment required as your regime is working.
 
Had a very low worm count for my mare a while ago, advised not to worm, two weeks later found loads in her dung. Spoke to vet said worm counts can change from one piece of dung to another and lost of other factors, I have gone back to normal worming plan.
 
You have to mix your horses muck up a bit, not take a sample from just one poo in order to get a realistic reading.
 
Yes you are lucky as you have the lowest count available. You don't need to worm this time, egg count was cheaper than worming wasn't it?
 
Counting is less about cost more about long term resistance - if everyone carries on worming when they don't need to resistance will increase and we'll be in a position where wormers are no longer effective.
The big drug companies aren't investing in horse wormers so there are no new drugs in the pipeline.
One worm count is intersting, doing it every few months for years will give you a great history to rely on.

Your worm count company can advise you on when and with what to worm - they are the experts. Less than 200 epg is my personal rule of thumb.

Westgate have a good video showing you how to take a sample to ensure it is as accurate as possible.

Aye it was cheaper than my spring worming but we were recommended the worm count method by our local tack store for the reasons polosmum gives below :) Mind you it's always nice to have something horsey work out cheaper than usual ;)
