Pleae be aware that worm counts don't tell the complete story.

They don't identify emerging encystead small red worms or some tape worms. Only a blood test will identify their presence.

My horse got Laminitis as a result of emerging encysted red worm despite similar worm count results

You can't get a 'clear' count, the best is <50 epg. Good result though

Sounds like good results for your horses. <50 epg means in effect 'clear' as no worm eggs were seen

Peter all our literature emphasises both the points you make and always has. Results must be understood in the context of the whole worming history and programme as it seems your experience would sadly illustrate.

yes the literature is very comprehensive. I run a closed herd of 4 , 2 youngsters and 2 older ones.I rest my pastures for several weeks or months at a time. for the past 2 yrs thta have been wormed at 13 week intervals with moxidectin [equest] and moxidectin&pyrantel [equest pramox].
I'm exceptionally pleased with the results.

I had very strange results from my lot with my most reacent worm counts.
4 ponies, same field, same management, 2 with counts of <50, 1 with a count of 200 and one with a count of 4000!! I was so shocked by his that i had a second count done and then wormed him, it came back as high. Goodness only knows how his count got so him.
We currently only worm when worm counts say we have to AND the twice a year for tape worm and encysted red worm.

GillB, I too thought that there was no such thing as a "clear" count. I've had counts done at the vets in the past and they have said "clear" but I just assumed they ment it was very low. This time I used Abbey Diagnostics and the lady I spoke to on the phone said 3 were clear, no eggs to be seen, and 1 horse was less than 50.

For the one with 4000? we used panacure 5 day (not sure what chemical it is would have to go check) as the pony with the huge count is a veteran who normaly throws a bout of colic when wormed, panacur 5 day is the only one that he doesnt colic with. We did one set of 5 days, gave him a week, sent anouther worm sample, it cam back as 300 so we did anouther set of 5day and he is now down at <50

the wierd and wonderful world of worms!
The panacure 5 a day shifts encysted larvae so your oldies had a good "clear out".
