I have joined a promotion at our local vets for worm counts, but have never done one before, and there are no instructions in the bag. So, what do I do? How much do I put in? does it have to be fresh, or one from overnight?

Hi - as fresh as possible and ensure you post early week so it can be processed fresh (ie not sat in the mail at the weekend). Ensure if you are doing more than one horse that you don't contaminate one pot with the sample for another - so use your fresh disposable glove in each case and bag up before proceeding to the next one ( I do 4 at a time :) )

We do it on our yard, it's best to get a bit from a fresh one. You don't need alot I normaly just fill the pot that is supplied & always get a bit from the middle of poo, just remember to stick the glove on :p

We normaly do it on a Sunday & they get sent off first thing on a Monday morning

The kit normally consists of a small plastic pot, a polythere glove & a self sealing bag. Just pick up a small piece of fresh poo in th morning (about a 2cm cube) & put it in the pot & put the cap on. Place it in the plastic bag & seal it up. Fill in the details on any paperwork & then post it off the same morning......job done.

Ofcourseyoucan it's not just tape worm, if I'm right a worm count only picked up on roundworm eggs nothing else, hence why I won't use them. When a better system is sorted to pick up on allsorts of worms I will re think but have known so many problems with owners thinking they cover everything and before u know it the horse has colic and after a wormer it's clear to see why.
