ive been considering this instead of routine worming esp as my horse has recently colicked.how does it work ,approximate cost and how quickly do you get the results thanks. also what would you think is the safest wormer as paranoid about horse now and different things setting off colic.

If i may jump on this post.Stinkbomb can i ask that when you get the results back from the lab is it in plain english or long words that you cannot understand??.So in Laymens terms does it come back saying that your horse has high Redworm and you need to worm using such an such wormer containing blah blah blah.Thankies.

Hi, ive used worm counts before, I think Abbey diagnostics, about £9-00 results back i think next day, with choice of how they contact you (post, email or phone) Yes it is in English and tells you what is an acceptable worm count and how many eggs are seen in your sampe.

I have used Abbey Diagnostics for quite a few years now. Tests are £6.50 for up to 4 counts per go then £6 for up to 10 counts.(check the link given above) First count is only £6. For every 10 counts you get one done free. They will email, telephone or snail mail with results. I always choose email and get results within 24 hours.
To start worm counting you need to contact Abbey to get a kit. A few days before you are due to worm, collect a FRESH sample from your horse and post. By the day you need to worm you will have received your results. Results are written in very plain english. Eg <50 epg no strongyles seen. There is a chart at the bottom which tells you the levels of worms considered high medium low and what worming is suggested. It's very simple and cost effective.

Not to hijack hopefully debsflo.

I've just received my first worm count kit from Abbey diagnostics and shall be taking the sample tomorrow.

Presumably she still needs to be given an Equest Pramox once I get the results whatever they say because of tapeworm and encysted redworm?
