Worm egg count recommendations please

just a word of warning and it appears not many people know. A worm count doesnt check for tapeworm so make sure you worm for that still anyway! A horse at our yard has been ooff for a while and turns out he has tapeworm even tho worm count says he is fine!

Thanks for the word of warning, I did not know this. Do you hapen to know how the owners found out the horse had tapeworm (i.e. is there a test that does detect tapeworm which I could do in addition)?

I use westgate labs they are fab and quick and even remind you when a count is due. If all clear i just worm for tapeworm and for Encysted stages of redworm as they cannot trace these twice a year. Here is a PDF explaining all. I fel much better that im not putting undue wormers in to my horses and they constantly come back with a zero reading so its always nice to know you are doing it right :) http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...tejWDA&usg=AFQjCNFo8_ERNWqw5mUjTLMB9c9ubmW4zA

Tapeworm can be detected through a blood test but obviously that isnt the cheapest route! I would worm for tape but if your horses isnt right and you have suspisions then best speak with your vet

Agree westgatelabs are brilliant, my old yard used them and when my horse had pin worms they were able to tell me exactly what they were and gave me really good advice as to what to do next

^^Great Advice^^

I have come across a LOT of people that don't know this

Westgate Labs. Used them for the first time in July, got results back same day. Called them to discuss findings and lady very helpful, asked more details about each horse (height, age, type etc) and then based on that info recommended suitable wormers. Will definately be using them again. Also decided to buy my wormers from WormersDirect and was very pleased with their service too.

Think there was a thread on here a few weeks ago about the same topic

Abbey got a bit of a batter if I remember correctly although there are some people who haven't had any issues.

sorry only just seen reply. She had a bllod test done thats the best way ino of but it was because he had been off for a few weeks and was having mild colic episodes. So now every horse on yard being wormed for tapes just incase.

Ditto - westgate labs - quick , efficient and friendly. My boy had an egg count of 800epg when i first had him but i pooh pick and now he's down to <50 which is great , I do worm autumn and spring for tape worm , last time i did a worm count with westgate i bought their value pack of 4 test kits so saved a little money there as well.

They don't pick up on encysted either ( spelling) so still have to cover that. Personally I don't worm count and if things aren't made clear to people you could end up with horses getting worm burdens because off the misunderstanding about worm counts or that's my views anyway. A horse I knew had a very good worm count but 2 weeks later down with colic and vet wormed it, riddled with small red worms which they feel must off been encysted and all come out the stomach wall at once. I'm sorry but I would perfer just to worm and know what's going on.

Thats easily cured by worming twice with a wormer for tapeworm that also covers encysted redworm, gives you piece of mind with the worm counts that your horse hasnt become immune to the wormer you are using :)

Worm counts are brilliant but the management also has to be in place.

For example poo picking should be done as often as possible and horses should have a clean area to eat from in the stable (not just on the floor where they also stand).

We now have had clear or some low counts for the last two years and some worm for Tape in autumn and spring with Equest in December and others worm just once a year in December using Pramox, I am one who worms just once a year and have not had anything other than a clear count back... the Pramox works against Tapeworm for 6 months and during this time the fields are cleared of droppings twice a week :)
