Worm Egg count what to worm

Don't the FEC company recommend what to use?
My programme uses Ivermectin at this time of year if worming is required.

The count has been done by YO and my daughters mare is only one to come back with a count. YO says its cause she is 5 which I don't believe. YO just said she needs worming, have to say I try to take little notice of YO as poss as imo she is just a bored rich housewife. In the past when I have done counts etc I have worked with FEC company re worming

Did she do it herself? How reliable do you think it is - we have a nice lady who comes and does them on site, and she is very particular about how the sample is collected, how fresh it is and how she extracts a some to check. She is also very knowledgeable about parasites, wormers and resistance - if 500 epg is right and she is the only one, on clean pasture, she may well have a resistance problem, in which case using the same old same old will just compound the problem. Borderriever on here is Gill from Westgate Labs, hopefully she will advise.

Agree with getting advice from Westgate, of course it is not her age lol, more relevant is the worming history: you should have a record of all the worming you have done, and the egg counts.
ALL horses need to be wormed in the autumn for encysted redworm, but other than that use a worming program according to current advice, which includes worm counts.
The saliva test for tapeworm needs to be done every so often [when?], result is instant.
As you have a high worm count it is essential to worm, there is a variety of ingredients and for this reason you need to keep a record.
Probably you will have a mix of ingredients this time, and need to take another poop count 2-3 weeks afterwards to check what is happening.
Did you see the result, did you take a representative sample [ take a few poopkins, mix and sample].

Thank for the reply

We have only had her 3 months but wormed her before she came onto the yard

YO is a nightmare, we are only ones that keep ours on assisted all rest are on full and she likes it hat way as has full control and the owners don't ask any questions. She picks a certain type of owner if that makes sense!

I don't trust her judgement hence being on assisted - I only let her bring them in when Im at work I even leave feeds made up!

I will look at getting a "stronger" wormer this time for encysted and send a sample in 2 weeks

Its not a matter of a stronger wormer it is a different wormer, you need to understand that there are different worms and they need different treatments.
Check out worming here:

My advice is to do the tapeworm test first then decide which wormer is indicated. Use Westgate Labs to advise you, using a scattergun approach is no use, you need to know what you are doing first.
Some wormers have a residual effect so you might see worms two weeks after the worming.
For field hygiene, it is best to worm one day and keep horse off the pasture for at least 24 hours.

Hello, please get advice. 'Stronger wormer' not a good idea. Ring Westgate in the morning so that a full history can be given. TBH it could 'be her age' at 5yrs if she has been wormy as a youngster it can take a very long time to get normal counts every time. 500 epg is not terribly high so don't worry, just ask for help!
