WORMER ADVICE AND HELP PLEASE!

Whilst poo picking my paddock today I found what I think are blow/botfly worms in some of the horses poo (this is a picture I found of the identical offending worm http://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/...&showNextQ=yes My friend and I have a horse each and we have recently moved them to a new yard, about 4 weeks ago. They were wormed not long before we moved to the new yard and there are no other horses on site. Whilst I was poo picking my horse did a poo and I immediately went over to check it, I couldnt find any in his poo at all. Could it be possible that the flys have laid eggs which have hatched in the poo in the field rather than the horses being infected with them? (We poo pick every day and have never seen them until now). Or is it possible that only my friends horse is infected? What wormer would we need to use to get rid of them? Any advice would be greatfuly received, thanks!

I know exactly how you feel, I have had this problem with my horses at a previous yard.
I was convinced that my horse had a bot infestation so I started bringing her in a night, and there were not bots in the morning droppings but out in the field there were what looked like little maggoty white things in her droppings. I think some flys do lay there eggs in the horse droppings.. BUT if you are unsure maybe get your horse worm counted and see what this reports back, the other thing to do would be to worm your horse with something like Equimax or Equest Pramox which contains Ivermetic and Parziquantel which kills bots, tapeworms and roundworms and various other worms. I would worm both horses at the same time so you know that they have both been treated.

^^^this. I have this exact same problem with my horse. When i first got him he was under weight and when poo picking i found worms/maggots in his dropping so immediately thought that he had bots and gave him a serious wormer (equest pramox), but this didnt seem to make a difference as i was still finding them in his poo's - so i took a sample to the vets for checking (one with the worms/maggots in and one fresh without) the count came back completely clear. So i put it down to fly stike on his poo :eek:

Flies seem to love his poo!

Get a worm count done.

Thanks for all the advice :) thats decided then I shall be sending off a sample to be worm counted and see what the results are. I am now thinking that flies are laying in the poo in the field as I only seem to find them in a small number of poo's but to be safe I shall get them worm counted. Thanks again :)
 
NB if you do get a worm count done... make sure you get a sample from a FRESH (i.e. you see him do it!) dropping for this very reason. Particularly as he is field kept - more chance of contamination.
