This is a link with basic information about pinworm: http://www.equidblog.com/uploads/file/JSW-MA2 Pinworms - Equine.pdf
My friends pony had pinworm a few months ago. She treated him with a couple of wormers, and kept him stabled to monitor what came out for over a week. After two days of 'worm free' droppings, he was turned out again. As an extra measure, she wormed him again when the others in her field were wormed two weeks later.
Her pony has now started with all of the symptoms of pinworm again. My other friend went on a wormer course the other week, and she said that pinworm can be a re-occuring problem. She said that the worming programme my friend has followed have very similar ingredients in the wormers used, and it would appear, non-effective treating her pony for the pinworm as there seems to be an immunity. She suggested using a different type of wormer. (In the link above, it states that there has been resistance to ivermectin reported in some areas - this is an ingredient in the wormers my friend has used).
I also read somewhere else, that wormers now are made that well they are easily digestible compared to the wormers years ago, and so alot of wormers don't reach the back end of the intestine where pinworms are found.
So far this year, my friends pony has had Equi-Max, Eraquelle (sp?), Pramox, and Equest. These all treat pinworm in larvae and adult stages, however, they just haven't solved the problem for this pony!
My other friend suggested Strongid-P, however, this only treats adult pinworm, not the larvae. So, if she used this, the pony would get rid of the adult pinworms, but eventually the larvae would mature into adult worms and the cycle starts again!! GAH!
HELP! Which wormer would you suggest? Thank you so much if you can help! xx
