Apologies for doing one of these threads as I know they are done to death but I am looking for advice on wormers.

Bit of background, I am in Ireland and I have 2 horses an 11 y/o Belgian Warmblood/ISH and a 3 y/o KWPN/ISH. I have had the 11 y/o in livery for the last 2 years but have her out on grass since November when I got the 3 y/o.

I used to have a strict schedule of dosing the 11 y/o Equest in the Summer and Winter and Equest Pramox in Spring and Autumn. I never had any issues with these on her but after reading some horror stories of the Pramox affecting horses I am scared to use it on the 3 y/o as I have no idea how it will affect her and also worried to use it on my 11y/o as she's now on a different lifestyle to how she was last time I dosed her.

So basically, can anyone recommend me wormers for the 2 of them that are available in Ireland and is it okay to continue with Equest?

Wish I was more versed in wormers as all the different types are double-dutch to me so any advice would be greatly appreciated!:)

so the reason for the pramox is to treat tapeworms. In combo it' s more of an issue if horses have a large worm burden that is then cleaned out.

Alternative options are an ivermectin + praziquantel like equimax.
Or double dose strongid/pyratape P.

There is some resistance to the latter so I like to include one dose with praziquantel in the year (usually autumn) and then double dose pyratape in the spring.

Or you can test for tapeworms

You want to keep a winter dose of equest going so that you cover encycsted red worms before the spring emergence.

Thank you so much for this! So do you think I should keep the Equest going for Summer and Winter and then use Equimax for Spring and Autumn or is there anything I'm missing out on?

Worm egg counts, tapeworm saliva testing and there is now an encysted redworm blood test available.

We reallyyyy need to move away from using moxidectin (in equest) four times a year as there are beginning to be problems with resistance to the wormer.

You can also buy praziquantel only via certain vets, if your horse needs treating for tapeworm. It’s a special order since Equitape was discontinued.
