As it says on the tin really!

I know I should know this but I've never been very good at which wormers do what and at what time to use them. Is there anybody out there with a better grasp than me who could offer their opinion?

Thanks!

We have a Jesstickle as well as a Jesspickle now?! How confusing! :D

At the beginning and end of the grazing season (generally March & Sept) then you want to use a wormer that covers for tapeworm. Personally I like Equimax as it not only treats all 3 species of tapeworm, but nearly all other types of worm (Not encysted small redworm, but you dose for them in Nov time). Plus, if you've a big horse, like one of mine is, then you needn't buy more than one syringe, as one has enough for up to 700g of horse. Hth.

I have never been too fab at worming properly but now I use Equimax Tabs and they are brilliant. Very palatable which is excellent as the syringe never worked well for us (we resorted to smothering the paste in bagels, hah!).

I use the tabs once at beginning of April and then again in October. You can even get free placebos sometimes which you try first to see if your horse will accept them without spitting them out. If they spit out the placebos, you can return the real thing and get your money back rather than wasting them. :)

just answered on other post about worming - equest pramox now, equest in 13 weeks, then pramox 13 weeks after that (sept ish) then equest etc..... it is the ONLY wormer not known to have any resistances.
We had a vet talk and the fort dodge lady came and asked why we changed each year to different wormers - we all said because of resistance - she asked how do we know which one our horse is resistant to? - of course unless you prob have expensive tests you dont know - and so i checked it on internet - and yes equest IS the only one that has no known resistance in europe. so i just changed to that -so much simpler tbh! so now i find worming easy!
it also melts on horses tongue so i dont have to worry if doesnt swallow she cant spit out as dissolves quickly!!!
(not affliated to fort dodge by way - may sound like i am lol but i just like simple worming programme and it made sense to me!!)

1) horses arent resistant it is the worms

2) yes equest has no known resistance in europe YET it will happen, worms mutate all the time. So no we shouldnt be using it all the time or we are buggered. like the farm in mexico that had to pts all the horses and the land is now contaminated with triple resistant worms.

so please dont use it constantly. Also it would really help (resistance wise) if people didnt worm and turn out on to clean pasture like a lot still do.

yeah meant worm not horse!!!

i tend to not do the one mid summer instead i worm count - but mine is on individual field and poo picked every day so worm count low. I always do spring and autumn for tapeworm.

So do you think should change then next yr? to a diff chemical?

The idea of resistance doesn't flummox me too badly. I'm a scientist so that part is simple. Its the black magic of names which all sound the same which gets me! In honesty I think I'd actually be better just trying to work out which active ingredient was best for which time of year. I'd probably remember that better!

I dont think I would use equest more than a couple of years in succesion if using it every worming (ie 4 times a year) even if fort dodge seem to think its still the answer to everything ;)

jesstickle, I can do that for you instead, I often think its easier :)

so winter/december treat with moxidectin or fenbendazole for encysted red worms.
spring (march/april) use pyrantel at double dose (there is some resistance so dont use this all the time) or praziquantel

summer grazing season: treat at recommended levels with ivermectin or pyrantel or moxidectin (this is where I tend not to use the moxidectin and use ivermectin instead... there is very little resistance to iver atm)

or
poo pick more than twice a week and poss then reduce the frequency of wormer

and or send faeces of for worm counting (a sensible option but I would be inclined to do them more frequently than seems to be recommended!)

sept/oct treat for tapeworm again so praziquantel or pyrantel.

Some people choose to only do one of the tapeworm treatments.

if that doesnt make sense let me know!

ester, that is perfect. I've saved what you said and will keep it and refer to it until it finally sinks in. Stupid, dullard brain of mine!
