New horse arriving - what and when should I worm him? (Have asked previous owner for worming history but not yet heard back). Coming from a dealers yard to a 2 horse yard. Any suggestions? Was thinking of getting the year pack from equest.

When my gelding arrived in February he was underweight and obviously wormy although he'd supposedly been wormed. I used Panacur equine guard, it's a 5 day and goes in their feed and kills everything (bar tapes). My gelding is next due May 1st and will do him for tapes then, he's a different horse already from when he arrived..will be posting some before and after pics soon...! (He's the light bay in my siggy)

For new horses, my vet advises Panacur Guard to start with, then Equest a month later. Panacur isn't as strong, so with a horse that might have a heavy infestation it will get rid of some of the burden and Equest will finish the job. You don't want a sudden worm kill or the horse could get an impaction.

Having spoken to a worming specialist I was told Pramox is much much better than Guard as it covers everything and is all done in one fell swoop. It seems to be gentler on them too.

pramox is not gentler on them at all, moxidectin and praziquantal combined is an extremly powerful wormer, if you don't know the horse's history it really will be much better to use panacur five day guard and follow up with equest a fortnight to a month later, the reason for this is that the guard will shift some of the worm burden gently over 5 days, thus hughley reducing the likelihood of an impaction colic caused by a mass cull of worms blocking the intestines, following up with equest will kill anything left behind by the panacur. i really would not give a poor horse with a possibly significant worm burden pramox, the stuff is so strong it is also not recommened for use in pregnant mares or foals under six and a half months either, i would like to know who the expert was!!

Equest will not kill anything leftover by Panacur Equine Guard Equest on its own does not deal with Tapeworm and nither does P/E/G,also Panacur should do the job for encysted small redworm on its own you shouldn`t have to finish off with Equest, you would have to use Equitape, Pramox, double dose Strongid-p or Equimax to deal with Tapeworm, but i agree Panacur is better for a heavy burden.

The best things to do with a new horse is give them the five day course of panacure equine guard. Then ususally a double dose of pyratape P ( or strongid p) Then you join in the the current yard worming program.
This will get rid of all types of worms at all stages.

i wopuld be far far more worried about encysted small redworm over tapeworm anyday, clinical evidence is proving that these are far more dangerous, i would not stop worming there however! a tapeworm treatment would be the next agenda, then in 6 weeks time a worm count, if a horse was really really wormy i would have a blood teat done too just to be on the safe side, the point of my post was disagreeing with pramox being advised as a first wormer in this situation, mental note to self not to post after driving from wales to sussex a few hours previous
