Wormers - poorly dog??

Hi. Posting on behalf of a friend

Her 12 month old Boxer was wormed last Saturday. It was a wormer bought from the vets - Drontal. She weighed him and gave him the correct dosage. He has had a reduced appetite since then but not normally a greedy boy. However, last couple of days he has gone completely off his food though he seems fine in himself. He has been eating grass and his stomach is 'growling'. Other doggy (Staffie) wormed at same time is fine.
Is this normal? She was going to call the vet this morning - thought I would do a quick post on here first.
Any thoughts most appreciated.

No it doesnt sound normal to me. I think she is right to get in touch with the vet. Some animals do react badly to chemical worming or it may just be that particular drug he has a problem with. Other than that he might have a huge tapeworm burden thats trying to come out all at once.

She has just called vet. He said keep an eye on him for today and offer him some chicken or ham and to call back tomorrow. Dog was just given a piece of chicken - he dropped it and only ate it when it was hand-fed, which has started us thinking maybe something wrong with mouth/teeth?? He was eating a bone earlier in the week and it may have cut his gum - friend's sister has just mentioned that she thought she saw a bit of blood. Maybe he has a sore mouth and it is just a co-incidence with the wormer?
She will have a good look at his mouth later.

I think it is very likely the wormer. My Yorkie had exactly the same reaction a few weeks ago after I wormed him with Drontal, although my Springer Spaniel was OK. They were both dosed for their size, and my Yorkie only had half a tablet. I did some research on the internet and it appears reaction to Drontal is quite common. He was sick for a two or three days and wanted to eat grass. I fed him very small amounts of i/d for a few days, and he got over it, but next time I will ask the vet for a different wormer.
