This morning I found an ascarid in a pile of muck. The horse is 13 years old last wormed on Dec 21st with ivermectin and praziquantel. . (Last time I saw ascarids was when he was 3 years old, worm counts kept coming back at less than 50 yet he had a wormy belly so after seeing them I dosed him.) He has a very elderly companion body condition good for his age but not a lot of fat. I am minded to give them both moxidectin as this will also treat encysted red worm . Is the old one too old for this will it be too harsh for him?advice please.

Was your old one wormed in Dec too? I've found Equest on its own OK (& if you haven't yet wormed for encysted then good idea with warm weather) but Equest Pramox harsh. If he was wormed in Dec then hopefully the burden shouldn't be too high and I wormed a horse of the same age with Equest without issue this time last year.

I think Equest is the only reliable wormer for encysted redworm now so should be done once a year and it will knock back everything apart from tapeworm.

I know loads of people with wormy horses who have never had a problem before. I've just ordered worm counts and tapeworm tests for my lot

Equest which has Moxidectin is much safer and kinder on the tummy than Pramox which is very aggressive. I learnt the hard way after one of mine who is an otherwise very healthy horse coliced twice on successive years. Once I realised what the trigger was I changed from Pramox to Equest now and Equimax in 12 weeks time. He has been fine ever since.

after lookingf on westgate labs web site ive learned that ascarids can be resistant toivermectin and moxidectin so have got panaur 5 day guard which is recommended for not only them but for encysted red worm too.

There's a high level of resistance to Panacur for encysted redworm.
I know that, so in your expert advice what do I use for ascarids? not strongip p for reasons i neednt go into on here. Westgate say roundworms ie ascarids have rssistance to moxidectin and ivermectin so im not using those.
