Worming advice again!

New horse has arrived at my yard, unknown worming history. Looks in good condition certainly does not look wormy. Owner has just wormed with equimax but YO advised that she should have used Equest or the new Equest Paramox <SP> or Panacur Guard.
YO also said that he should worm again with equest almost immediately. The owner is reluctant to worm again so soon and is insisting that he will use equest when the horses is next due to be wormed (end of Marchish)
Trouble is this horse will be out with mine - should I be concerned? Is it ok to worm the horse again with equest so soon?

But doesnt Panacur Guard have resistance problems?
 
Every new horse at our yard is given this wormer and our counts are always low. However we do all follow the same worming plan from the vets, thats the important thing, to all worm on the same day with the same wormer, its when everyone does their own plans that worm problems seem to build up.
 
At this time of year you are targeting encysted red worm, which can only be dealt with by Equest or Panacur Guard (which is gentler, maybe a bit less effective).
I think the YO is well within his rights to demand that the horse is wormed effectively. TBH, I would go back to who ever sold your freind the wormer and ask why it wasnt explained that its not entirely suitable for this time of year. Go beserk until they give her a good discount.
 
Your YO is quite right in what she says. However as far as the other horses go there is not much danger as this new horse has been wormed and will not be dropping worm eggs to infect others. You can check this with a worm count.

The horse in question may of course have encysted worms, but these can be treated in about 2 months before any problem occurs

So he cannot have equest or panacur guard for 2 months? Assuming he should still use equest or panacur guard?
 
I think she means that the encysted will stay encysted for 2 months (until spring), so you can effectively treat until then - that may not be the right terminology but hope y7ou get my drift.
You can worm again straight away.

Thank you. I think he has also spoken to his vet now who has advised him to use panacur guard as it is not so harsh?
 
Your yard owner is correct. The horse should be wormed again before it infects others.

Encysted Small red worms can cause many problems including Laminitis, dmage to the digestive tract in the host horse so it is in the owners interest to worm the horse again.
 
Panacur guard will shift a burden bit by bit. Equest does it all in one go, so is more likely to cause upset. Due to resistance rumours etc, its always best to follow up with Equest to ensure everything is zapped!
I usually give 3 days Panacur Guard, then Equest a couple of days later.
 
with an unknown worming history and given the fact that the horse has just recieved eqimax i would advise a 5 day course of panacur guard, this is a good time of year to treat encysted small redworm (cyathstomes) these are one of the most dangerous worms to horses as they burrow into the gut wall and lie dormant until they emerge en-masse in the spring, this can cause severe scouring and weight loss as well as anemia and in worst case scenarios death. the panacur guard will be fine if given a week after the equimax, although i prefer to do this treatment the other way around!!
