Hi all ? I’m looking for some advice about worming. So I have 3 ponies who all graze together, have a set winter field and set summer field So each field gets roughly 6 months rest. Poo pick daily. what’s the best all round worming plan to go by? I had Been doing worm counts on them, cobs always show up very low or none, but welshie always has a high count? He had a reaction to a wormer last year ( can’t remember which one) so I am a bit worried about over worming him, or which wormers to use. So the main question really is, what time of year do you worm count/ treat if needed? does worm count detect all types of worms or are there other tests that needs to be done? If so how often, which month of the year. All advice appreciated

You can set up a plan with a company like Westgate although a lot of vets offer the service too. Alongside poo counts you'll need to do the equisal saliva test for tapeworm.

I use Equest in January (or Equest Pramox for the one which runs a positive tapeworm test) and then do egg counts March, June & Oct. Equisal just once a year unless something has a positive result in which case I do it twice.

I do a fec (poo test, for redworm and roundworm) 4x yearly (spring, summer, etc), Equisal for tapeworm in autumn and spring and a blood test for encysted redworm in the autumn. Under this regime I haven't had to worm my boy at all for two years. Westgate are good for advice.
