Worming advice please!

I've been on livery for years now so have been going along with giving my horse whatever my YO gives me to worm her with (like you do!)... I am now probably going to end up in charge of worming the yard at my new place and am thoroughly confused!!

I am trying to find out what Berlin and Kit were last wormed with, but off the top of her head Natalie reckons it was Equest in about May-time. This was what Maiden was wormed with, and before that had Equest Pramox (don't ask when, idiot didn't bother writing it down!) Berlin and Kit have been having worm counts and only worming "when necessary", but TBH I don't trust worm counts because there's no guarantee that just because there are no eggs in the poo that there are no worms in the horse. I am going to offer to set up, organise and implement the yard worming programme (to encourage the other two to agree to regular worming!) and I would like to follow the Panacur/Pyratape/Vectin three-year plan as it is easy for my simple brain to follow

My problem is that obviously we are on an Equest/Pramox plan at the moment and I am having trouble deciding how to switch over to the other one without over/under-dosing! They are due in a couple of weeks to be done with Equest.
As far as I can see, my options are:
1) Equest in a couple of weeks, then Pramox 13 weeks later. 13 weeks after that would take me nicely into doing the five-day course of Panacur and then into the other programme.
2) Equest in a couple of weeks, then double-dose Pyratape mid-September - BUT I'm not sure if this would be over-dosing?
I need to keep it all as cheap and simple as possible so I don't put the other two off doing this "my way". If I really can't figure it all out then I'll go and have a chat with the people in Scats as they are usually helpful. In the meantime, any advice or anything is much welcomed!

Jan - Tactical Routine Worming

Feb - For encysted Redworm worming treat with a five day course of Fenbendazole.

Mar - Tactical Routine Worming

Apr - Tapeworm Worming: Double dose with Pyrantel.

May - Tactical Routine Worming

Jun - Tactical Routine Worming

Jul - Tactical Routine Worming

Aug - Tactical Routine Worming

Sep - Tactical Routine Worming

Oct - Tapeworm Worming: Double dose with Pyrantel.

Nov - For encysted Redworm worming treat with a five day course of Fenbendazole.

Dec - For Bot worming treat with Ivermectin after the first hard frost

Although most of the leading brands of horse wormers are effective against adult redworms (take expert advice before relying on Benzimidazoles, ascertain that your horse is infected with worms that are susceptible to it by taking a poo sample and having an egg count done) there are times when you will need to worm tactically to treat for specific worm types at certain times of the year. Which ever chemical group you choose to use on an annual basis you will still need to dose tactically to control encysted small redworm, tapeworm and bots.

Treat for Encysted Small Redworm Larvae during the winter months with Equest or Panacur 5 Day Equine Guard

Treat for Bots during the winter months with Equest, Equest Pramox, Eqvalan, Eraquell, Vectin, Eqvalan Duo or Equimax

Treat for Tapeworm in Spring & Autumn with Strongid P, Pyratape P, Equimax, Eqvalan Duo, Equest Pramox or Equitape (EQUITAPE TREATS FOR TAPEWORM ONLY)

Treat for Large and Small Redworm during the grazing period with Equest, Strongid P, Pyratape P, Eqvalan Duo, Panacur, Telmin, Eqvalan, Eraquell, Vectin or Equimax.

All products can be used year round for Large and Small Redworm treatment (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF EQUITAPE AND BEARING IN MIND THE ABOVE ADVICE WITH REGARD TO BENZIMIDAZOLES) as part of a worming plan with specific products being used for strategic worming when necessary.

Hope this helps a bit...am sure I saw a specific worming programme on the net somewhere once when I was looking around as to what to do with Benson...will see if I can find it for you

I saw that on the 'net somewhere - thanks for the help but I am still a bit confused! I *think* if I gave them Equest when they're due then used Pramox 13 weeks after, that would cover them for everything for most of the winter (the Intervet three-year chart suggests double-dose Pyratape in September, five-day Panacur in November, then a single dose of Vectin in December - which kills nothing that the Pramox wouldn't have done already). Then by the time the Pramox's dosing interval runs out at the beginning of February, I can switch to the Intervet plan (five-day Panacur, then double Pyratape in March, then routine Panacur, Pyratape or Vectin during the summer)... have I gone totally crazy reading all about worms or would that seem to work?!

Option 1 seems to work for me but the answer sits with poo picking regularly we get worm tested once a year and since we've been making that effort her worm count is really low...like all good things it takes time talk to the folks at CWG they 'll know what'll suit your individual circumstances
 
As long as you do not under dose, you should be able to remain on the equest & equest pramox program as there is no known resistance to these chemicals yet. (I was told that by the rep not long ago)
If you are going on to the 3 year course you can save money on the panacur year by buying the panacur equine guard and just doing the one dose (not the five days), this has the same effect as one syringe dose, this has been confirmed by intervet who make the product.
You are correct about the worm counts not being 100% as if you read the small print it will say that it wont show tapeworm, and a few others I cant remember.
If you are really unsure speak to a qualified AMTRA person in a agricultural feedstore, these generally have the higher levels of qualifications than the plain equine feed stores.
Considering I work in an agricultural feedstore and I am not qualified, I can not advise any more as it is illegal.
 
why does everyone want to make it so complicated?

just stick with equest/equest pramox ev 3mths and you're sorted. even better, worm count and then just worm once a year with pramox if all ok. saves pumping horse full of unnecessary chemicals and saves the environment and your money.

plus, panacur, strongid-p etc etc all have resistance problems now.
 
Yeh I dug it off the net...whacked it in google but couldn't find anything telling you exactly what to do! lol!! Yeh snap...didn't pay much attention in the worming lectures either...not the most interesting of subjects!! lol!!
