worming advice please

Ponies were wormed today with Eqvalan Duo (after advice)

Now I'm not really sure when I need to worm next and with what wormer?

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Your best bet would be to use one of the egg counting services. They will tell you whether your horse needs wormed or not, and if it does, what to use. In the long term worming strategically should work out cheaper and will also help to slow the development of resistance in worms, which is already a big problem.

Ok thanks I have a previously done a worm egg count and so have a voucher for the next one, but when would I need to get a worm count done?

If you're just starting with the worm egg counts, it's probably a good idea to do them whenever you would have wormed. I think Eqvalan recommend a 12 week interval, so wait 12 weeks after you gave the wormer then have another count done. If you don't need to worm, give it another 12 weeks and test again. If you did this for the first year, you would have a good idea of the horses innate ability to deal with worms and hopefully you could reduce the counts the following year. Some of the companies offer a service where they remind you when the next count is due, so it might be an idea to use that for the first year at least. If you're doing it alone, remember that the egg count doesn't tell you anything about tapeworm so you still have to worm for that at least once per year.
