So come sunday i will be the proud new owner of a very handsome little sec A stallion (will be cut soon as hes settled!) but i strongly suspect, infact im pretty certain, that he has never been wormed in his whole life, so as ive always had a regular worming program with mine (who are due in a few days with equest) where do i start with this little fella?? Worm him as i will the others/double dose/use a specific wormer?

In this situation I would advise 5 day panacur guard with a double dose of strongid p on day 6. After 14 days do a worm count to check for resistance to the panacur guard, if all comes back ok then slip him in with the others on your programme, if any resistance is detected speak to your vet or SQP who will advise further.

We always used to do the 5 day panacure equine guard if history was unknown and then tape worm a bit after, but nowadays I would just use Equimax which covers tapeworm and bots as well as the usual, plus encysted forms. :)

Cross-posted lol

Just be very careful using too effective a wormer on something with such poor worming history, killing too many worms in one hit can cause a blockage in the gut leading to a very sick pony. Also equimax isn't licensed for encysted small redworm, I wouldn't use Equest on this pony just yet either.

This was my worry with him although he looks perfectly healthy, you can never be too carefull. I will stick 5 day panacur on my shopping list with strongid P (which a double dose of would normally be my 1st point of call) he will be in quaranteen for a week to be safe anyway

Equimax does not do encysted redworm....

I agree with others, 5 day guard and follow it up later with either a double dose pyrantel or an equitape. Alternatively have your vet give anti inflamatory or steroid prior to a dose of pramox.... If in doubt speak to your vet...
