Hello,

Sorry I didn't want to hijack the other post about the poor in foal mare that died, but just have a few questions.

Which wormers cover both tape and encysted?

I have only moved mine onto the 'intelligent system' in the last year so still learning. Last spring I used equitape. If I cover tape and encysted and then worm check am I missing anything else that wouldn't necessarily have symptoms until it's too late?

I also poo pick at least every other day and our land hadn't been grazed for 20 years before mine went on there 18 months ago.

My strongyle worm counts from Westgate have now dropped to zero for both of mine.

Hopefully I'm not the only one wondering this.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

To my knowledge the only wormer to kill encysted and tapes in one hit is Equest pramox. this is a combination wormer containing moxidectin and praziquantal.

If you are not keen on this approach you can use Equest in the green box, moxidectin only and follow a week later with Equitape.praziquantal only.

I use Equest pramox twice a year in the winter around nov/dec time and then in the spring mar/apr, this has worked for mine and I use counts over the summer to check everything is still ok.
Counts are not infallible they will only give you a picture of the adult egg producing population that may be present within the horse. It is perfectly possible for a horse to be carrying a huge burden of juvenile worms yet have a low count! Also encysted small RW cannot be detected by count (nor by any other means so they must be treated at strategic times of the year) Tapeworms are not detected by egg counts either although a blood test is available for these.

The pic below is the aftermath of worming my new horse with Pramox, the horse had no problem at all with the wormer, he also looked well in himself, not your typical poor wormy horse, so he proves that just because you can't see them doesn't mean they are not there!!

I think equest does encrysted red worm...could be wrong. My worming programme has gone to pot this year as mine contracted pinworm - major yard epidemic! So panacur was used, only a few came out so shes been cleared of everything except tape.

However ive been told not to worm again now untill march/april for tape & encrysted redworm using pramox which is a combined tape & all the usual worms. I then worm count through summer may/july, using equest if anything is found, then septemer/november i worm with pramox again, so tape & encrysted red worm has been done wormed again for.

Its quite straight forward really, only having to worm twice a year, then worm count the rest of the time.

Some good info from Maisie above, and a great pic. Yuk! I expect you know that your horse is likely to need more worming doses in future until you have control of the situation.

Thanks for this Maisie, and for the lovely picture! Just picked up my Pramox today and will check what comes out. Why do we have horses? :D:rolleyes:
