I wormed my new horse Ollie recently for small encysted redworms with Pramox because he'd lost weight suddenly and upon enquiring with his old owner found he wasn't treated for them in winter. The others I did at the same time with a bot/ tape wormer. A few days after he passed lots of small redworms and pinworms but the others seemed fine.
Now, a few wks later Alfie has started passing pinworms but they're all dead. He's had an itchy back end for a week or so (and looks a little bit sore) and I've just wormed them all with Strongid P as a result. I'd say it's been a fortnight since I last wormed them and am guessing he's picked them up from Ollie. I've looked up the lifecycle but can only find the human version which is about a fortnight.
Is it normal for them to pass dead pinworms in large quantities? Probably half a dozen visible in every poo.
Also, he kicks (with intent!) when I try to clean his backside, although I did manage to put some sudocrem on the part he's been itching last night.
How can I break the cycle without the cleaning?? Some people say to worm twice or even three times with the strongid to prevent new eggs being laid, but I've also read you shouldn't worm too much. Confused!
