Worming help needed!!

I need some advice on worming my horses.

We always used to use a natural wormer every 8 weeks from a Spanish Vet seller on Ebay who had develped the product himself. It was fantastic and we never had a problem with worms and rotated between their 2 products.

They must have packed up as i can't find it anymore :-(

So we used Strongid P in November under my vets advice. We turned them back out after the winter this week and i really need to worm them, they are all a good size and weight and not ribby but they have developed a noticeable indent near their stifles between their belly and hind leg (only way i can descirbe it so sorry!) Do you think this is worms?

What do i need to worm them with? We have a breeding stallion, preg mares and yearlings?

Any advice much appreciated!! I look at the new all in 1 Equimax but not sure if it covers everything?

I would get a worm count done. We have wormed ours for years, but they have been on the same land for the last 7 years, we poo pick twice a day, and we've owned the land for 20 years, so we know exactly what animals have been on it. This is why we decided to get a worm count done a couple of weeks ago. Ours came back as having nothing. I do not believe the counts pick up tape worm however?? Anyway, our vet said no need to worm at the moment. We will do another count in a couple of months. If you get the vet to do it, they will be able to tell you what to do.
 
Second that. Get a worm count done but remember even it is low you will need to worm for tapeworm as this does not show up in a regular wormcount.
 
they need a double does of strongid p now this month, could of done with giving them panacure equine quard the 5 day course for small red worms in feb really.
i did make a worming plan for a friend useing information her vet gave her about what worms exist when and what each womer has in them etc... will try and put it on here cos i would like someone to check thru it and make sure its ok so look out for that tommoro evening or something

this is the plan i use:
1st year:
fed (5 days befor end) - 5 day panacure equine guard liquid to put in feed for small red worm
end march - strongid p double dose for large tapeworm
9th june - equvalan
18th aug - equvalan
30th sep - double dose strongid p
end nov - equvalan for bots

2nd year repeat but swap equvalan with equimax....

what do people think? does that do it all? worming can be so confusing?!!!

Swapping eqvalan with equimax will be a waste of time...they are both the same chemical group being ivermectin wormers, plus equimax is combined with praziquantal for tapeworm control, so you would be treating for them non stop!!!

Depending on your husbandry system you have several choices:
Assuming you have a steady group of horses on pasture that is regulary poo-picked, a plan as follows:

I would avoid using panacur equine guard as there is so much resistance to it now, due to overuse and underdosing...

so one plan would be.....NOV/DEC = equest - treats encysted small redworm, and bots, as well as other important worms
FEB/MAR = EQUEST PRAMOX = controls as above But includes tapeworm

MAY/JUN = equest

AUG/SEPT = pramox...........and so on, you are totally safe to continue on this plan.

However pramox is not licenced for pregnant mares or foals of less than 61/2 months of age.
The equest programme is only 4 doses per year, the chemical is moxidectin.

Another exmaple would be a pyrantel programme.......trouble with this is the routine dose is recommended every 4-6 weeks, this leads to using alot of chemical, increasing the probability of resistance development.

NOV - either 1 dose of equest OR panacur 5 day guard for encysted small redworm

DEC - ivermectin for bots (not needed if equest is used as NOV dose)

FEB - either 1 dose of equest OR panacur 5 day guard for encysted small redworm.

MARCH/APRIL - DOUBLE dose of strongid p for tapeworm.

MAY - AUG - strongid p every 4-6 weeks as routine dose

SEPT - Double dose strongid p for tapeworm

NOV - panacur 5 day guard OR equest for encysted small redworm.

I have got my worming down to equest pramox twice a year and counts in between - really pleased with this as less chemicals used for resistance to develop (although my infoal mare is on a different programme!)

you can include worm counts in your programme, but please be aware that they only detect the prescence of adult egg laying worms infesting your horse, counts have to be carried out frequently to be a really effective tool.DO NOT detect encysted small redworm or tapeworms, so you will need to do strategic doses with the correct chemical for these.

That's just a couple of programmes......ask at your local ag-merchant or saddler, if they sell wormers they will have a qualified person to give you FREE independant advice and point you in the right direction....or PM me if you like.
 
ahh gosh how confusing!!
i had a feeling equimax and equvalan were the same ingredient so glad you said this!!
i get my wormer from my local tuckers or molavon store...
i have never heard of equest paramox?? heard of equest... i have also been told that using equest can sometimes cause a reaction in your horses gut.... dont no if this is rubish or if it means the FIRST EVER WORMER as equest could mess up your horses guts.... has any one heard this at all???!!!!
