Wormers were due a couple of weeks ago so I went to the vet. One dog is pregnant so they said she had to have panacur, 5mls a day EVERY day until 2 days after she has the pups. Was supposed to start yesterday, but she hated it and it seems like an awful lot of wormer for her to be having.

Does this sound right?? My vets can often make mistakes, and it was a receptionist/possible vet nurse who told me what to give.
I want to get it right.

Thanks :)

When I was planning on mating Evie last year it was 11 years since I had bred a litter, and the Panacur every day idea was a new one. I asked my vet (who I have complete faith in) and he said in his opinion it was a waste of money and the worst case of worms in newborn pups he had seen had been from a bitch who had undergone the panacur course. He said to do as I had always done and worm before mating and then worm pups as normal at 2 weeks and then fortnightly. I followed this advice and had a lovely healthy litter.
Obviously as your bitch is now in whelp you have missed the opportunity to worm pre mating, was she up to date with her worming prior to mating?

I believe you should be worming every day from day 40 of pregnancy until pups are two days old. I don't see it as a waste of money if its preventing passing on worms to the pups?? Why would you want them to be infested?

I have always wormed pre mating, and never had pups infested with worms. Had my vet recommended the panacur I would have used it, but he had very little faith in it and I was happy to take his advice. Had he recommended it and explained why then I would have used it.

The daily worming is done to kill the latent roundworm lavae/egg stage that most female dogs have living in their tissues that cannot be killed by the normal worming programs from successfully moving into the bitches glands and milk supply. As it is daily as each "reactivates" and moves towards the milk supply etc they should be killed off and this should in theory stop the pups being infected meaning that they themselves will not need as many frequent doses in their young lives...your breaking the lifecycle of the worm and preventing it from being spread.......
however personally I have issues with it as I cannot see how it will not lead to resistance problems in the long run. We wouldn't recommend the same in a horse unless there was a very serious problem so why is it ok in a dog?

I would be of the camp that say to worm the bitch before mating to kill of active infection and then worming the pups to kill off their own burdens as required.....Mild worm burdens should not cause healthy pups serious problems so the 2 weekly cycle to control build up seems more sensible to me....but the daily dose is the current official line for preventing infectons.

Thanks for the replies, have had really iffy Internet signal!

She's been routinely wormed, but wasn't wormed directly before mating. It just seems to be an awful lot of wormer. Ill persevere though if its a normal thing to do.

Anyone who's used this daily wormer before, how do you give it? I've been syringing but she hates it, poor thing :(
