I wormed my pony in July using Eqvalan, i know he is due to be wormed this month for tapeworm, which wormer do people recommend?

Thanks everyone :)

use pyratape p x 2 as it is not part of the eq group, then next year either go for the eq group jan - dec or go for the ivomec, panacurs, strongip etc but the staff at farmway and such like should be able to help you as well.

I have been using a worm count for a year or so, but YO "decided" all horses had to be wormed with Moxidectin in July, illogical as it should hve been kept for use in November [encysted redworm], so I am a bit stuck, I don't like worming when he is at low risk. does anyone know the cost of a blood test for tapeworm, AND how often it comes up positive. there are no dogs or other animals on the grazing.

i was always led to believe that tapeworm was one worm that did not show up in tests hence the need to worm especially for tapeworm, autumn and spring.

it is also my understanding that unless you do the equest yearly worming, all other wormers should not have the same main ingredient in them, i.e. moxidectin, praziquantel (for tapeworms), ivermectin, Noromectin, Pyrantel Embonate, mebendazole.

so if you are worming each quarter you should use a wormer which does not have the same main ingredient as your previous wormer. then the next year you need to change these again, so year 1 just do the equest x 4 through the year, year 2 use 4 different wormers, year 3 go back to the equest and so on.

hope this make sense.

If you use the Equvalan Duo that covers for tapeworm, its the sister product to the one you have used. I would use it sometime in October towards the end of the grazing season. Good tapeworm in horses,it will surprise you how they are passed on!

I would suggest worming at the first frosts with equest pramox, this will worm for everything inc. encysted redworm. Then possibly worm in spring for tapeworm and then worm egg count from spring.
I priced up the tapeworm test at about £33 all in (inc blood taking fee, handling costs, p & p and test fee at our vets.

i would suggest you contact your vets and ask them for a worming program they should be able to provide you with a rotating 3 yr one,
what you use this time depends on what you used last time, unless you are starting a new program.
in an ideal world all the horses grazing together need to be wormed with the same product at the same time.
good luck often worming seems to be a contentious issue

This is very outdated now. You should use faecal egg counts and worm accordingly, but if you are sticking to a rigid, prophylactic plan, you should use the SAME active ingredient for a year, and then change. If you rotate every few months, you just increase the rate of development of multiple resistance. I wouldn't touch any of the benzimidazole products with a barge pole now - high levels of resistance to them countrywide.
