Hey,

I have recently bought a horse and send off an egg count, which came back positive for large and small redworms with a count of 1050 eggs per gram.
The Eqvalan/Smart website recommends treating her with Eqvalan Duo. I know she has not been wormed since September last year and am worried, to cause colic if I treat her too vigorously.

Any advice on wormers I could use? Is Eqvalan Duo the best option?

Thanks, sotroph

You could use any of these Eraquell, Equimax, Eqvalan Duo, Equest or Equest Pramox. Equimax, Eqvalan Duo and Pramox will also do tapeworm and bots which don't show up on a worm count. Personally I'd go for Pramox.

I should say some people have posted on various forums that they have had colic issues with Pramox but I never have and neither has anyone I know.

Thanks for your reply. I am just worried, as it says on some of the websites, don't use pramox if the horse has a high egg burden or unknown worming history. What do people think about Panacur 5 day and then pramox a few weeks later to deal with the rest of the worms and the tapeworms?

We had the same last year on a very colic prone pony, vet recommended Equest Pramox and then 6 weeks to the day Equest. It worked and he was fine x

I wouldn't use equvalan duo, pramox or any of the others that do tapeworm as well as I think it is too risky. I would seperate the worms and just do the redworm for now and follow on a bit later with equitape for tapeworm.(although maybe tapeworm was done last September)

I would use ivermectin as a start. Then I would worm count again and see where you are. Obviously you wll want to use equest or panacur guard at some stage to deal with encysted but I wouldnt use equest until I knew the worm burden was under control.

If you went onto the Westgate lab site or their facebook page then you could get information perhaps on doing a reduction test and also info on the best way of dealing with the problem.

I would not use one of the one dose strong wormers as it may well be a terrible shock to their system. I ALWAYS use the 5 day panacure guard. It's just as good and as its over the 5 days aO much gentler to the system
Heard far too many colic stories of horses wormed with equest etc

Soulfull - Panacur 5 day is not just as good. Worms have built up a lot of resistance to it.

OP - yes, as you have said, Panacur 5 day followed 2 weeks later by an Equest Pramox is a good protocol to follow. Consult your vet ( though I suspect this is what they will advise). If there is real concern, then sometimes a course of steroids to reduce adverse reaction or inflammation the worms dying may be necessary.

My horses worm count came back at 1050 a couple of weeks ago. This is a medium burden not a high burden. Was recommended by the vet to worm the horse with either ivermectin or pyrantel embonate then do another count in 4 weeks time to check that the wormer has worked.

Contact westgate labs for advice.

I personally would always use 5 day panacur first for a horse with unknown worming history and a high burden. I think the resistance is more of an issue with the single dose panacur but you do need to have as accurate horse weight for dosing as possible.

I second panacur 5 day then equest a while after, this is what I have heard off my vets. However it is always good to give them a call.

1050 is not that high, Ive done wec that have been a lot higher. I would worm with Pramox then test again 4 wks time.

I did mine with Eqvalan duo, then two weeks later with pramox, I was worried about colic implications. She was passing tapeworm sections like mad which the Eqvalan duo didn't seem to change, but after the pramox they disappeared altogether. They've started to come back now though...
