Our yard is searching for the best value value for worming as usual. We normally use Pramox at this time of year to rid any tape worm. Then every 3 months or so we do worm counts as we don't like putting chemicals into the animals if we don't need to. We found Molemec Plus Paste on the Mole Valley Website which is their equivalent of Pramox. Their tubes treat up to 600kg where Pramox treats up to 700 kg but they are so much cheaper. Molemec plus retails at £10.86p per tube. I looked all over the internet & the cheapest Pramox, even allowing for discount as I needed 11 tubes was £23 - £24 and even as high as £29. It's certainly worth a look as it can save you pounds.

Molemec Plus doesnt treat for encysted red worm so it isn’t equivalent to Pramox. But I do agree it is one of the better value tapeworm treatments, it's what I'm doing mine with this week

Molemec is not the same ingredients as Pramox. Pramox contains Moxidectin which treats encysted redworm which the Invermewctin on molemec won't do. Both will treat tapeworm as both contain Praziquantel.

If you use molemec, then you will also have to treat encysted redworm and use Equest or depending on resistance in your area possibly 5 day panacur.

I use eqvalan duo after first frost for tapeworm. Then equest original in December. Then eqvalan duo again in spring.

I do saliva tests around now and only if positive would I worm for tapeworm. They get FEC 4x a year and always below 200, so generally they only get an equest mid winter.

This time of year you need to treat for encysted redworm which won't show up on an FEC. Do a saliva test for tapeworm and depending on the results you can either use Equest, or if positive for tapeworm use Equest pramox.

Eqvalan duo is a cheaper alternative to treat tapeworm but I'm not sure if it will treat encysted redworm? (never used it so happy to be corrected)

It's referred to as "autumn worming" but ideally you need to wait until after the first frost, so I usually do mine around end of November/beginner of December. Saying that since it's been so mild recently, my vets are recommending that you could potentially wait until January to worm for encysted redworm. So I suppose OP could just test for tapeworm and FEC now to see if they need worming and/or treated for tapeworm and use the mole valley wormer they have (if needed or an alternative if no tapeworm detected) then treat with Equest in the new year.

Have you had this done? We were talking about this on another thread and am curious about costs as a vet would have to come out, take blood and send it off. Going on drawing blood and sending them off for other tests, I can't see it being under £100.

Yeah it works out to be about that if you do it on its own. I combine it with other things.

that is why sadly not many are going down this route. if possible know worming history new horse take a wc do not share pastures eith other unknown horses wc keep on top of poo picking daily. then should only need to worm for encyted and tapeworm after frost in winter and wc in summer. a good wormer after frost will also kill off lice, round worms and others. no need to keep worming every 6 - 8 weeks this is what is causing the worm intolerance

I had bloods taken for tapeworm testing. Vet was already here to do teeth. £28 + VAT. Equisal is £20.50 at Westgate Labs.

I already do Equisal.

Was £28 (really £33.60) the lab fee for processing the test? I know my vets fees for callout and taking/processing blood as I've had it done for other things.

That is the cost of vet taking blood and for the lab fee. Vet already here for teeth, so no call out fee.

Be interesting to know the separate lab fee, my vet separates out the cost of taking the blood and sending it off from external labs fees. Though when I had tests done for liver issues, I only paid once for taking and processing blood. Then i had 3 charges for lab fees as some tests were done internally but there were 2 external labs that were used.

Timing wouldn't work for teeth/jabs so it would be £50 call out.

It's theoretical at the moment as I'm on a yard worming programme which does encysted.
