Worming in the field - anyone else tried it?

I've not only wormed my mare in the field (several times) but last May the vet arrived early to do her vacs and she was still out so she was jabbed in the field... she didn't even stop grazing!

Everything happens to mine in the field, worming, jabbing, trimming, bathing... they are still happy to come running to me and generally hang out together.

Have wormed mine in the field in the past, no problems :) though when worming my girl for the first ever time in her life I was suprised that she was very good, though did have a proper sulk afterwards standing in the back of her box picking up mouthfuls of hay then spitting it out and then taking a mouthful of water and covering me in it! Cheeky moo.

Quick point about worm counting, someone was telling me (vet nurse) that worm counting is only useful if done by vets as they can tell you what worms are there. But also it is only effective at certain times of the year. So best to speak and get it done by your vet not an independant lab offering cheap worm counts.
I know they were probably being biased, but its something to note perhaps.

The problem with worm counts is that worms live in little colonies in the gut, so if you happen to pick a poo with a big heap of worm eggs in it, great, but a horse could have loads, and still pass plenty of 'clean' poos, giving the owner a false analysis. The labs say to mix a sample from at least 3 different piles. How many people actually do that?

The send-away labs can definitely tell you what kind of worm - but only for the ones that show up in a count.

No, I am not that brave!!!

My ex racer was fab about being wormed, my appy has a meltdown about it!!!

Generally do it in the stable, am often whirled around and then we have the very disappointed let down look as though I am absolutely the worst owner in the world and how could anyone eat anything after having that vile concoction shoved down their necks!!!

Field - wouldn't even try!!

However, injections in the field are absolutely not a problem!

I've always wormed in the field and never thought anything of it.Never had trouble catching them unless I am holding a grazing muzzle or fly mask. Then you won't see the ponies for dust.

Never had to use a grazing muzzle but mine loves his fly mask - never, ever have a problem popping that on in the field!

Yup, the only time my mare dislikes me is muzzle or fly mask BUT her version of not being caught lasts approximately 2 minutes and never gets faster than a lazy jog!
