Worming Issue! - Anyone come across this?

Hey guys,

Soooo yesterday i sent my boyfriend to the local saddlery to get Jack some wormers. Hes been here 4 months now and i brought one over with me.

Boyfriend shows up empty handed and says.. "you cant buy horse wormers in denmark". Wtf?

Well you can.. they come from the vet. You take a sample of your horses poo to the vets with you and if they have worms, they give you a wormer.

Now, im not 100% convinced about this but I admit, i could be way out of line. Ive heard it said many times that people worm too much in the UK, but ive always worked on worming more as prevention rather than cure.

So - do i get wormers sent over from the UK and carry on as normal? Or do i go poo picking and send it off to the local vets?

has anyone come across this before? is this the norm in mainland europe?
 
Oh haven't heard of that but then again I'm not in Denmark!
Can only see that method being helpful if everyone in your field do it at same time.
We are on a worming programme from vet.Whole yard have to agree to it.They worm 1st then random poos from each field are tested next time if need wormed if neg no wormer has worked so far (touch wood).Only catch is you don't pay for poo testing but get wormers from vet but it has saved me at least 60 quid so far!!
Personally I would phone local vet or ask someone on your yard.Would be interesting to know if true and why.
 
We have one vet here that prefers the poo sample method and another that prefers routine worming so no help really. I did the poo sample and had to buy wormers from the vets which was more expensive so have gone back to routine worming.
 
Yes we do over-worm here, and I think that vets are now using the worm count labs more often so it will eventually be the norm.I would do it the Danish way as it could save you a fortune in the long term and also mean that you are not overworming your horse. Would you take a painkiller if you werent in pain?
 
I use poo counts to determine the need for all wormers except the twice-yearly tape-worming. One of mine hasn't needed a roundworm specific for four years.

You need a good field-cleaning programme/regime and be very careful where your horses graze when out and about. Also, who grazes your fields!
 
My boy isnt out a whole lot at all (again, things are different over here) and the pen he does go out in is used by only a couple of other peeps.
