when and what should i worm

my horse lives on her own and has a sheep for company
i am totally confused when and what i should worm i dont want to worm more than is needed

i used to follow the same as a livery yard that i used to work at but since ive left i dont know when to do it

well there are lots of different plans you can follow so I will do and in essence post! oh and your sheep will be acting as a good hoover!

you should worm for tapeworm once or twice a year (pyratape/strongid/equimax/pramox or similar) in sept/oct and/or march/april.

you should also worm for encysted red worms at some point over the winter (i do it xmas time) as they would emerge in spring.
so equest/panacur 5 day guard.

Throughout the summer will you be poo picking, as you only have the one if you poo pick you might find it better to do worm counts during the summer grazing period or if not you will need to worm over the summer, frequency depending on time each wormer lasts.

many find the equest program easiest as this only requires 4 doses a years and will cover everything

hope that helps.

This is also my vet and she said last week on a visit that a rigid worming plan is no longer a goo idea as they getting resistant to the wormers and much better to do worm count and worm as required

I would do an Equest pramox now just to target encysted small redworm, these are the hidden danger - the ones you cannot test for, so is best to do a dose for them, The pramox will also kill tapes. your situation means you are a low risk so you could just pramox now and then count through the spring and summer - the sheep will act as a worm hoover, just as the horse will clean up any worms which are a problem to your sheep.
