Paddy is about 5 months old
I've bought a one dose wormer which says suitable for dogs and puppies.
It says to give it in a morning with 1/5th of his dinner and give the rest in the evening.
Paddy has 3 meals a day! Do I really have to feed him just once on the day I give him it?
Thanks

What wormer is it?? If it's Bob Martin I say bin it and go get a wormer like Dontrol from your vets...........That way your dog is less likely to up chuck on your carpets.

Yep, another vote for going and getting drontal from the vet (although I think now you can buy from chemists and places like P@h as well) But your best having him weighed to get the correct doseage anyway.

Did the Vets not sort you out with wormer when you went to get him vaccinated??
Otto has been wormed with Milbemax since the day we got him, every month until he was a year old and now every 3 months.
The stuff youu can buy over the counter is as much use as a choclate teapot!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that uses Milbemax!

I thought Drontal didn't cover tapeworms, therefore you need to worm with something as well as drontal for complete cover?

Another vote for Drontal

Being old I can remember the days when we used to worm once every 6 months rather than once every 3 months, I am never quite sure why advice changed (other than more revenue for vets/worming manufacturers of course

) so I tend to go for every 3-6 months personally

Given Paddy's breeding and the below info about Milbemax, I would suggest maybe Drontal is better...

Special Precautions and Warnings

Studies with milbemycin oxime indicate that the margin of safety in certain dogs of Collie or related breeds is less than in other breeds. In these dogs, the recommended dose should be strictly observed.

If you use the correct dosage or under you should be safe, as it is just the margine for error is smaller in Collies, but I think I would still be inclined to use Drontal.

Ok so Panacur, Milbemax (although a different from Standard dosage) and Advocate treat for Lungworm. Panacur does not treat for Tapeworm and only Milbemax and Advocate treat for Heartworm. Drontal does not cover Lungworm or Heartworm.

So it would seem the best combination is Drontal and Advocate (spot on flea and worming treatment) as Advocate and Milbemax have similar ingredients and can cause toxic reactions in dogs if used within 2 weeks of each other.

panacur and milbemax do kill lungworm but not at the standard doses. advocate is the only one to do that. we dont have heartworm in this country so no need to worry about that.

Best regime for dogs in lungworm areas:
Advocate monthly
Drontal every 6mths

Other areas:
Drontal or Milbemax every 3 months (both do round and tapeworms)

Steer clear of petshop rubbish - waste of time and money.

I checked with my vet.. well the vet nurse gave me all the information as to what type to use and how much initially. I now buy Drontal online from suppliers like vetuk as it seems to be cheapest, the vet charged me nearly double online price

so i won't get it from them again, I accept they will be more expensive but not that much of a margin.
