Please can some one settle a disagrement my sister and I have.
Her horse is kept on his own and has done for about 6 years, he has the season pack wormers, we give him the tape worms ones April and Sept and the other 2 in between.
Anyhow she says he cannot possibly have worms as there isnt another horse to catch worms from, and droppings are done daily. I said they get worms from the ground, so where do horses catch worms from and is a horse kept alone less likley to have them.
Tea and home made scones to settle the argument!!

Well it depends if your grazing is 'worm free' to start with. Was it grazed previously by other animals and how long ago?
Theoretically if she depoos daily and has regularly wormed her horse should be worm free. Depooing the field breaks the worm cycle. The trend now is not to worm regularly but to worm test the horse and then worm according to the results. Only a tape worm requires a blood test or a wormer to ensure the horse has none ( I do this annually). I use herbal wormers and all my worm counts come back < 50 eggs.
