If you have a closed herd, poo pick daily or twice daily where would any worms come from to encyst and so is it therefore necessary to worm for them. Worm counts are clear

We also have a closed herd with fields poo picked daily. Horses have all had negligible worm egg counts. I did worm with 5 day Panacur Guard and one of the horses passed so many red worms I was surprised she didn't colic. So yes, I still worm annually for encysted redworm.

I have a closed herd, poo pick and rotate grazing. Counts have been 'no eggs seen' for the last 5 years. All wormed with Equest in early Jan and two had high counts in late spring.

The eggs can be ingested by other critters or birds and dropped in the paddock, or the larve can move too. They also lay dormant in the guts for ages.
