Sort of a follow on from another thread. If a horse is routinely wormed throughout the year does it still need moxidectin for insisted red worm in the winter?
From personal experience, I would say yes. I switched from routine worming to egg counts, trying to be eco friendly and all that. After two bouts of mild colic, at roughly the same time of year, twelve months apart, I discovered that egg counts cannot pick out red worm, and routine winter worming is still recommended, alongside the count.....which rather makes a nonsense of egg counting.
Routine winter worming, meaning the encysted red worm dose of moxidectin after the first frost.I got caught out like this too. Tbh I think "routine worming" has a different meaning depending who you talk to. Like most people I know personally will routinely worm maybe 2-3 times a year max, but I have heard of other people doing it much more frequently. If your definition of routine worming means a wormer every 8-10 weeks then replacing several of those doses with an FEC and reserving an "always" dose for encysted redworm in January can make a dig difference.
Westgate are doing a webinar fairly soon on winter worming. Details belowI really need to learn about worming properly.
Honestly, I have always got by just winging a pramox down them when I remember![]()
To be fair, if you did that in say Dec/Jan and a few tests here and there to confirm and keep check on the situation you’re not going far wrong.I really need to learn about worming properly.
